I keep getting asked by people who see my builds to help them on their server, so I give you this article, hopefully it can help you all!

Initial setup:

The first thing that you are going to want to do after you have bought your server is choose a theme. You will want to decide what era you server is based in, is it going to be medieval? Or maybe you would prefer it to be based in the future.... The choice is up to you, but this is a very important part of the setup. You will want to involve your theme in everything that is related to the server.
You will need to install bukkit, or something with a similar function. I would suggest installing mods that will stop griefing. I suggest OwnBocks, or a plugins like Core Protect. This will stop people from griefing and is crucial. After this you will want to think about plugins that will make the experience more enjoyable for the players. This could include plugins like NoLag to make the server faster.
Players also enjoy having ranks. There are several different plugins that can set these up. Players usualy like to have different options open to them, so it would be worthwhile having quite a few different ranks. On the server's that I have set up, have have had different rank paths; paths would include a builder path, communer path, money path. Each path would have different tiers so that you could move up to a higher rank. Players would have to complete requirements to rank up. The highest rank in each path would be a staff position. Remember to base your ranks around your server's theme.

Building your spawn:
Once you have set up all of your ranks, plugins and whatnot, it is time to start building. Your spawn should be grand, as this is the first thing that all players will get to see. You probably want to make it big as well so that you can fit in some info, rules and portals for your server as well.
A few tips for building your spawn:
  1. Multiple levels makes builds appealing to the eye, most good spawns incorporate several levels.
  2. Color is good, too much color is bad. If you are building big walls out of materials like stonebrick, it is a good idea to add some patterns so that the wall is more appealing and not just an eye-sore
  3. Remember to make your builds fit your theme
  4. Don't build with cobblestone or gravel. THEY ARE UGLY!
  5. Natural is good. If you can make your spawn fit in with the landscape, it can look quite awesome. Some ideas would be using a cliff face as a wall, or having your spawn on a hill and smaller parts lower down.

It helps to make your spawn easy to navigate, signs can help direct people :) And it never hurts to get a second person to join in and help or just give some feedback.

Releasing your server and getting players:
Now that you have set up some plugins and built your spawn, it is time to open to the public. You may want to create a website for your server. I always create a website, usually on enjin because it is free (If you wish) and very easy to use/setup. On your website you can have places for people to socialize, apply for ranks, discuss politics and much more.
To get players, you will need to tell your friends about your server, and advertise on sites like Planet Minecraft, Minecraft Server List and similar websites... Use a program to create an appealing banner, remember to relate it to your server's theme. If the site has the option, install votifier on your server and get players to vote every day for a reward. Sites like Planet Minecraft also have a feature where you can "bump" your server each day, this is definitely worth doing, as it puts your server at the top of the list and you get lots of players to come on your server every day, if you want more players.

Staff:
Ok, so now that you have some players, your going to need some staff to look after the players and make sure that everything goes slowly. I would normally start a server with a couple friends, and for the initial stages, that would suffice for staff that were needed. But as your server grows you will find you staff being overwhelmed by players that are requesting things. This is when you get the players who have been on your server for the longest and whom you trust. Offer them a position, or wait for people to apply on the forums. It is not smart to accept everyone as staff who goes on your server, I try to aim for 1 staff per 15 players. Make sure that all your staff follow the rules, as they are a role model for all of your players.

Fun plugins:
It doesn't really matter when you get them, but players are more likely to stay on your server if you have some fun plugins for them to use. Examples of these could be Scavenger Hunt, Mob Arena and Spleef. I would advise against getting too many plugins, as it can flood your server and the players won't do as much together.

I hope that this has helped some of you out, feel free to ask any questions, I would be glad to help.

There is a large chance that I will be updating this blog quite often
