OK,

mining
so im going to teach you some mining techniques and what you should bring with you
before you go on a major mining, you should have a empty inventory

what you need: 15 stone pickaxes, 2 iron pickaxes, 3 stone shovels and 1 iron sword. some wood, a chest, armour, a bucket full of water and if possible a few potions of fire resistance. this could save your life if you fall in lava.
the reason you want a chest if your going across a lava pit put some important stuff in it eg: diamonds.

having your mine at its best:
the best way to have your mine ( if you don't play peaceful ). what you want is the mine connecting to your
house and you want a double wood door so monsters cannot get you. also have your mine full of torches, because you don't want those nasty creepers spawning in your mine and blowing you up.
in some parts of the mine have a crafting table and a furnace. this will make mining last longer. avoid tnt if possible. because only a certain precantage of items drop of what is blown up and only use iron pickaxe on diamonds red stone and lapis.

how not to get lost in caves
well sick of getting lost in caves, here is a solution simply keep placing cobblestone
from where U came from its that easy .

you need to know that the maximum hight you can find diamonds is 15 blocks above bedrock

the best ways to mine:

shaft mining
this is not accurately one of the best ways to mine, but its a basic and everybody knows it. all you do is dig down on a
45 degree angle, waiting to hit something this way is so basic and wont get you much.

branch mining

you may of heard of branch mining, the limit you can find diamonds is 15. this is possibly the best way to find diamonds. using this method finds you lots of red stone too. this is what you need to do, dig to the first layer of bedrock, then use this technique what you do you dig 4 strait shafts, then when their as long as what you want
start this thing on one of the shafts. go to the end of the shaft and dig as long as you want mine any important materials. you find then walk 3 across from the shaft you just dug. then start again you see the inside. witch of the shafts is all visible because between the shafts is 2 by 2. do this to the rest of the major shafts. for improvements dig 3 high if u can bother maybe higher.

quarry mining

quarry mining is not the most effective way to look for diamonds, its more for coal and things like that.
to start your shaft mine, decide how big you want it like 32 by 32 or 12 by 12 something like that.
find a large open space and dig down one on every block. but you need one on the edge for stairs then another
and keep going until you want,

mining with tnt

mining with TNT is avoided. but their are ways to mine with it.
the best way to benefit with TNT is get a large stack and fill a
strait shaft with it then ignite it.
maybe blowing up a finished quarry would be good.
or another good way is to blow the walls roof and floor up of a cave
with tnt their are many ways to mine with it they where just a few.

the storage system

getting lost in your chests, here is a simple way to not get lost and always find your stuff.
dig a 16 by 16 hole or somthing like that under your house. go get a heap load of wood and come back
craft a heap of chests and a heap load of signs. dig a 2 by 1 hole i block forward from the bottom left
corner in the room you dug earlier. then place 2 chests in their go 2 across from it dig another. put chests in their
and keep doing that untill the room is full. now place a sign on one chest and put a few items witch are similar like sand and gravel. but remember their are those realy common items u get like cobble stone and dirt give them their own chest maybe even 2. then when every chest has got a sign maybe dig the back wall out put furnaces their. crafting tables. cauldrons potions makers maybe even a fully bookcased enchanting table. heres an e.g

the best mining and best storage systems

so im going to wrap things up now.
this brings us to the end their are many other mining Technic s on the web you
can find so have a look if you wish.

thanks for looking.

Well the "what you need" is way off balance its whatever everybody prefers. Most of the time i use 1 Wooden Pick, 1-2 Stone Picks 1-10 Iron Picks and 1-5 Diamond picks for a whole survival until i quit and blow it up :)
