Step one
Create a 2x2 hallway at bedrock level and continue it as long as you feel necessary

Step 2
Dig out 1x2 hallways every three blocks (just make them 1 block deep for now)

Step 3
continue those hallways as far as you want to collect materials from

Step 4 (optional but recommended)
Build a store room to store: extra pickaxes, cobblestone, and resources you've gathered

you are done now just make sure you are careful of lava
