Before I begin, I just want to say that this is what I did. I now have half a set of diamond armour. :)

Gathering Resources


First, I normally started punching that tree. I wouldn't stop till I had a stack o' logs! After I had the logs, I would probably make a crafting table and get some wooden tools set up. I'd get about 5-10 pieces of coal, make a few torches, and get looking for a cave.

Mining the right ores


So, normally I would get stone to make a few pickaxes to mine Iron. I would get about 11 pieces of iron (Enough to make a tool set!) and create some iron tools. By now, it would be night time. Probably, I would make a 3 block deep hole, place 1 torch on the floor and cover the top with a piece of dirt.

Making a home


After getting a bit bored of being in a hole for 10 minutes, I'll probably start expanding the hole. Eventually, I'll have enough space for a bed, a few chests, a furnace and a crafting table. I'd probably lead a few ladders up to the surface, [Or below]. [Crafting recipes below.]
