Is metal dead? A common thing said by a lot of people, but what is the real answer? Well it depends on what you consider metal. To me Metal is heavy fast guitar riffs, loud bad @ss drums, beautiful vocals with a nice heavy angry voice into it, lyrics that have meaning and long kickass solo's. When i think of that i look towards bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Korn, Slipknot, Trivium, Led Zeppelin, Avenged Sevenfold and System Of A Down. Now today there is much much more metal bands then there have ever been, but when you think of it (remember this is all in my opinion) there all disappointing and not really what metal is. Ok, lets look at what Metal use to be:
Songs that have a long intro with bad ass drum and guitar playing
Long hair and a rebelious additude
Shouted and had vocals of anger but still sounded beautiful and you could understand them
Lyrics where poetic and had large meaning behind them
Even when they did calm songs with little to no distortion you could still headbang to that shit
Normally talking about insanity, violence, being bullied, being hurt or satan (Only the Sabbath did that really) or supported strength
Talked about the flaws in the government
Bass actually had a large roll and most likely without wouldn't say as awesome.
That is just a bit of things i can think off from the top of my head of what metal bands use too be (now again remember this is all in my opinion). now for what metal bands are today
Normally all emo
Sing about wanting to kill themself or hurt themself
Not really poetic or clever lyrical writting
and 90% of the time that doesnt matter cause you can't understand it
They scream and not sing
Most riffs are stolen from Metallica or Iron Maiden
Mostly all wear black make-up and look like complete fags
Leaves out all the Mythical story stuff and singing about knights and demons and dragons (RIP Dio man, Fuckin RIP)
Most of the time don't have solos and if they do there lame and short
Normally there singing voice is very femenish and sucks, like no bit of manly in it
So is metal dead? No, its just different now. In my opinion the 80s had the best metal bands. But that doesn't mean all metal today is bad. Soad, KoRn, A7x, Slipknot and Trivium are some new age bands i really really like. Even though they have a bit of screaming in them they still stick to the roots of old 80 metal with a mixture of modern day metal. So there is still hope for metal, but there will never be another legends as James Hetfield, Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio.
