This game all started with a Swedish man named Markus Persson, who I'm sure only about a handful of people knew before the Minecraft industry started booming. Now, if you type "Markus" into a Google search bar, he's the second name down on the list, following Markus Schulz (who happens to share the same birthday as myself). Soon enough, he will be the first man on the list, and I'm sure one of the richest men in the world.
Now, I know you all love Minecraft as much as I do, but have you even stopped to wonder just how popular the game is, and has become? When I wrote this, on the Minecraft.net statistics, the numbers were as follows:
-18,074,843 people had registered on Minecraft.net
-4,301,962 people had actually bought the game
These numbers are baffling, and they are even more so if you were to check the website as of right now to compare these numbers I have recorded with the current standings. If you're curious, as I was, you can do a little math. So, at that point in time, 4,301,962 people had bought the game. Now, if you multiply this number by 15 (the original cost of the game in beta) you get a staggering $64,529,430!!! That is at the very least, Notch's current profit. I know I didn't account the raise in price to something like $28.00 USD, so you can think of that $64.5 million as the minimum that Notch has earned.
This research has really widened my eyes to the power and diversity of Minecraft, and I hope it does the same for you. If you have any ideas on more research you would like me to do, please leave a comment below.
