A few days ago, Microsoft won a lawsuit against No-IP (a popular dynamic DNS service) and confiscated multiple of its subdomains. No-IP was accused of allowing malware to be installed on unsuspecting users of the No-IP client that used the subdomains in question. In an official response statement by No-IP, they claim to have not known about these attacks and Microsoft didn’t go through them first. Microsoft asserts that these infections have been going on far too long and has affected numerous Microsoft Windows users.
However, with the seize of No-IP’s domains, Microsoft now legally possesses the domains and is attempting to pinpoint and redirect traffic related to the malware. This has led to countless No-IP users to have their sub-domains revoked. Microsoft states that their intent on taking over the No-IP domains was to halt the malware from spreading with access to computers through the No-IP infrastructure.
No-IP is used by countless Minecraft servers for their IP address, not only because of the free subdomains, but also because it’s a dynamic DNS service. This basically means if their IP changes, their subdomain will automatically update to the new IP address.
One of the drawbacks of Microsoft’s takeover of the domains is that many Minecraft servers will have to get a new IP (whether it be a different subdomain from No-IP, a subdomain from another provider, or just their numerical IP). Another drawback is that the entire No-IP service has been down for the past few days. Due to vulnerabilities during the giant subdomain overhaul, attackers have undergone a massive DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack on No-IP. Thankfully, the DNS infrastructure has not been affected by this attack (at least not as of this blog). The site has since come back online.
TL;DR Minecraft servers with No-IP subdomains will have to get new IP's to use because Microsoft took over most of No-IP's domains.
