I'm guessing you've heard about "minecraft realms." If not, it's a new addon in minecraft that allows you to buy a server to play on with your friends. Making the server does not include portforwarding/tricky stuff like that, no this server is created within mojang.
A minecraft realms server is 24/7, as long as the player is online, with only invited players to join your server. Up to 20 players are able to be invited and up to 10 can actually join at one time.
Pros:
24/7
No portforwarding, configure ips or LAN networks to have to deal with
Play with only your friends
Wil be on minecraft pocket edition
No size restriction on your world
Export minecraft maps
Regular world saves/backups
Command blocks
Cons:
No texture packs
No mod packs
Not all admin commands, however you still get most of them
If you want to host a massive server for the public, you can not do that with minecraft realms
Only 10 players at a time
Only 20 players invited
$13.00 per month
Prices:
$13.00 for 1 month*
$35.00 for 3 months*
$62.00 for 6 months*
*Prices may change
My personal opinion is that minecraft realms is not a server, but a survival world where people can join it. I do think minecraft realms is good and all but they should make it so that more than 20 people can join and invitations are optional. Otherwise this is a very good idea and a great improvement for minecraft.
Thanks for reading!

Edit: I would add "Easy Connection" to the pros, as there is a special button.
Before anyone mentions profit, honestly I thought the original idea was designed to draw in new users- a form of advertising, so they'd just be breaking even with it. But even at $2.50/month on a hosted service which would need maybe 500mb top, they'd be making ~$0.30/month profit from EACH server. That number adds up.
