I Just wanted to point out that this idea is now in minecraft, not exactly how i illistrated it... but its an offical thing now :)

Are you tired of all that extra redstone laying around? Do you ever wish you could give off more redstone power then a repeater? Has it ever accurred to you that theres hardly any red blocks in the game? Then perhaps you will want THE: REDSTONE BLOCK! The redstone block is long awaited and never created before( atleast not in this manner i hope...)
RECIPIE
The recipie would be 9 red stone dust in a square in the crafting table.
Abilities
1 The redstone block would be able to emmit a red glow , this would produce a little light sorce and look cool in certain creations people make ( such as a laser beam )
2 The redstone block would produce 20 blocks of redstone signal from all directions of the cube. ( note, this is more then the redstone repeater however the repater controlls the signal while the block will go to any red stone touching)

but make the signal for 32 blocks (double the simple redstone repeater)
