As some of you (or rather everyone) may know, Microsoft recently bought, or is in the process of buying Mojang for a whopping 2.5 billion dollars. Some people have been questioning it, others have been hating it. You all (or rather no one) asked for it, so here it is; my take on why Microsoft decided to offer on Mojang.
Minecraft. Minecraft is an easy sell. Make a plushie of an odd green "creeper" plushie and put Minecraft all over the packaging, and it'll sell like a Bugatti drag race.
Microsoft is a huge company; one of the top companies in the entire world. They have TONS of capital; 2.5 billion is less than 3% of the value of Microsoft.
I believe Microsoft was watching Mojang's unbelievable success with Minecraft, and when Microsoft realized that the only thing Minecraft is doing is growing fast in popularity, they took action.
Now that Minecraft is owned (or will be owned) by Microsoft, I actually don't think many changes will occur. One solution is they may just use it as a secondary source of profit. They'll probably attempt to boost their actual Microsoft product sales by making special features for various Microsoft products that include Minecraft in some sort, introduce Pocket Edition to Windows Phone, and possibly make a few changes, nothing too major I would think.
Now that Minecraft is bought out doesn't mean development is over. It's obvious that Microsoft will work hard to manage Mojang, and will continue rolling out various updates. Just because some top staff left Mojang doesn't mean the updates will suck; Microsoft is such a huge company, they'll have no problem hiring programmers/designers of equal or greater skill level. And maybe a few Swedish guys, too.
In conclusion, I think Microsoft will treat Minecraft well, and in a couple years we might as well forget about Mojang even being a private company in the first place. Yes, it's big news, but not negative news. Mojang is still a company; it's just in Microsoft's hands.
