If this turns out to be known oh well, i thought it was new so dont rage, or rage if you feel like but your the one looking dumb...
this requires only a few powered rails, 2 carts at least, some redstone dust, building material, a piston, a rail to continue traveling on, and a lever.
youll need to build a tower straight up just a little ways, at least 5 high. build it somewhat like this:

this is the slope that the 2 carts with land on. your now going to want to make a tunnel that is vertical, this will keep you lined up on the ramp. looking down on the cart launch, it should look like this but with more than one level:

for the top level, youll want it to look like this
@=Building material
_=normal rail
@@@
@ ______@

the normal rail is where youll load the 2 carts. now your going to want to have one one side somewhere near the middle or bottom of the tunnel a piston that is pointing toward the inside of the tunnel, this will be on at all times.
on the inside it should look like this

/=lever
[+]=piston
... = continued up or down
...

your going to want to have the piston on at all times, which is why using a lever is easier. youll then want to power the piston with the lever, since the piston is down 2 levels, ill let you figure that out till make some pictures of this.
after this point youll want to turn on the piston and put a cart on the rail, push the cart onto the piston, be sure that you have the piston down a little ways to so it can fall by the way. push a second ontop of that, it may or may not go inside of eachother. after this, get into one of the carts and pull the lever and fall, you should go on for a much longer time than your suppose to, and this without the powered rails, i went for a full minute on flat ground without any powered rails to get me going other than the first couple at the beginning. if this still doesnt work, let me know so i can know if i need to put up some pictures of the one i have that does work, i dont see why this wouldnt but just so you can try to make another that should work, make a track that loops, the first corner you hit when you go off the ramp may help with glitch although ive had it work without the corner. still this is cool, and unless it becomes to popular like the old minecart glitch, it here to stay for a while, and it would help for people who dont have much redstone, let alone gold :D
EDIT: this doesnt actually work to well, it is useful for somethings but it can be difficult and unpredictable, whats really happening is that carts are bonking into eachother at the corners of the track and that somehow sends them in opposite directions, if there isnt a corner that it hits, it just doesnt stop for a long ways for a reason i have not found out yet. if this helps you GREAT! if not, maybe i can find out how to put up a map without paying anything...
