BEFORE YOU READ
The long awaited Eula change has come! Scroll to the bottom to read more! If you disagreed with the old Eula then continue reading, but for those who just want to know how it all ended, skip the post and look for the link at the bottom of this page.

PLEASE
UNDERSTAND: I am aware of the greedy servers that had kits for thousands of dollars. Realize that this article is NOT defending them. I agree it's outragious and those who think that its okay should be banned from humanity.

KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU COMMENT: The big powerhouse servers like Mineplex and Wynncraft and all others not listed here, are NOT "Well off," like most of you seem to believe. Yes, they make thousands a month. They also spend thousands a month on the server itself. I sware at least half of you don't understand what Gross and Net Profits are.

Example:

Mineplex Monthly Earnings: 3,000.00
Gross Income 3,000.00

Server Upkeep: 250.00
Advertising Fees: 2,000.00
Web Service: 100.00

Net Income: 650.00

And for those of you who don't believe the above figures, here is last month's auction for advertising slots.

The multi-millionaires over at Mojang have decided they don't want their supporters making a little profit and are putting a stop to the ever so popular, server donation. Yep, you read that correctly, Mojang has just announced the crack down on what they call "Pay-for-perks." Their logic is that you shouldn't make money off of their creations and in a sense thats very understandable. However, what Mojang fails to realize, is that a Minecraft server is no longer their creation, its the server owner's.

I don't know about you but owning and creating a server is sometimes a second job. We, server owners, put time and effort into our servers along with paying monthly money. Without donations, how can we continue to afford the upkeep? Sure, you can still donate, but you'll get nothing in return and in a world of gamers we all know no one is going to do that.

Some may say the monthly payment isn't that expensive, only like 20-30 dollars a month. That may be true for most servers, but some of us don't get our servers from the dumpster and pay around 80-100 dollars a month. The titan servers like Wynncraft and Massivecraft probably pay close to 250 a month! Thanks to Mojang we will be seeing the downfall of the tyrant servers, which in some cases is a good thing as it opens up space for smaller servers deserving of the fame.

However, since there won't be tyrant servers then there can never be, unless one of you has, and is willing to spend, 2 grand a year on your server. Not to mention the cost of advertisements on server listing websites. I've seen the top 5 slots cost thousands of dollars for just a single month. THATS INSANE!

What happened to the small gaming company that was the Mojangstas? The ones who didn't care if you filmed their games and uploaded them to the internet free of copyright infringements. What happened to the company that used to keep its players close to heart and showed concern and put time into the updates? All I see now is another indie company making it big and going corperate. They are even saying you can't make money off any third party plugins because they somehow own the rights to bukkit plugins... even if you coded it yourself you can't use it to make a small profit.

My final thought is this. A Minecraft server was a way for us unemployed college students or highschool kids to throw ourselves into a creative canvas of unlimited possabilities and make some cash doing what we love (Dream Job). It was an oppertunity for anyone to learn a little bit about business and what competition and target markets were, whether owners saw it that way or not they still learned. Sadly, all that servers will be now is a money pit which is rediculious because we all know that Minecraft servers are the ONLY reason the game is still selling copies.

Just a thought but it seems a little suspicious that Mojang decides to crack down on the independent servers that pose a threat to their Minecraft Realm servers. Hmmmmm

The Server Cycle Theory: A server owner purchases a server. He sets up donations to fuel his server. Players donate and the server begins to grow. As more people become aware of the server they tell their friends who tell their friends. Those friends of friends purchase the game to play on said server. One of those kids decides he can make a better server. He then purchases a server and the cycle restarts.

Article Summary: Its as simple as this: For the owners who take time and care for their players, they should be able to have some source of income. Server owners are a big percent of the reason for the games continued popularity. It makes us feel "backstabbed" or "forgotten" when the company we helped get rich betrays us like that. I know that sounds self-loathing, but the truth is the truth, no matter how selfish it seems.

If I Were Mojang
The first thing I would do would be to make some kind of announcement. The number one thing that companies don't do is keep their supporters updated. So far Mojang has "hinted" at this "crack- down" and as a result; started a wildfire in the community. So, as Mojang, I would grab a hold of the situation by making some sort of effort based announcement. Next I would change the Eula to say this exactly. "Independly owned servers may NOT distribute anything related to the Game without meeting certain requirnments and submitting a Financial Aid Request." This way Mojang is able to comepletely control the distribution of content without needing to damage the balance of the community.

My Predictions (As a Minecrafter since 09)
The Eula will be enforced at the next game update as Mojang will be able to change the terms and conditions freely as it so states in the Eula. Once this happens smaller servers will be the first to go. The servers with 5 players on daily and an entire gig of ram to thier names. The next stage will effect the hosting companies. Prices will drop as the demand for servers go down. Remember (Price = Demand + Supply) Smaller hosting companies will close up shop, leaving the titan hosters to monopolize the crumbling market. Finally after a few months of the enforced Eula, the remaining servers will consist of the tyrants and the strugglers. Tyrant servers will see a substantial drop in income but not enough for it to mean their demise. The struggling servers will comepete with the Minecraft Realms untill they too are wiped. We will be left with no choice but to give in to the Realms and Mojang will see their plans comeplete.

If you agree; join hundreds of others and help fight the Eula

It feels good to vent... Share your thoughts in the comments.

Most knowledgeable comment goes to CelticHomeboy for:

"I personally hate this idea. Minecraft servers now have a monetary 'circle' or sequence which is required at the moment. Minecraft has evolved into this point. We can't de-evolve."

Commenting Rules: (Breaking these will result in sass from me)

1. Mojang DOESN'T give an ish about people getting unfair adventages by paying money. They DO care that server owners are profiting from their game. So don't argue with me on why they are changing the Eula.

2
. Do not attack me personally for my beliefs. This isn't news this is a blog! Some of you don't seem to understand that.

3. Do not comment with ignorance. It is my pet pieve. Don't say things like. "This is wrong, the Eula hasn't changed and its not going to."

EDIT: Closure has come my friends! "There has been one exception to this rule so far – Minecraft videos. We’re about to make a second exception – Minecraft servers." Read the full post directly from Mojang here!

No Offence, and I know this is against your "DONT COMMENT WITH BLA BLA", but read carefully, nothing is really changing, only re-clarification as people didn't read the EULA before (see notch + owen's statements), and secondly pls resize the font to make it smaller, having it larger is a put off for readers.

Just because I don't like their decisions doesn't mean I should quit plyaing. I'm sure you don't like the decisions your government makes, but you're not up and leaving the country.

Yeah this just a rant. In no way should anything in here be taken as "news." I like the big font, looks more organized than the microscopic size everyone else uses.
