This is my first rant so don't be expecting any major quality.
The popular reel is something we all want to get onto. It requires very hard work and alot of effort. Most of us have alteast once tried to get onto it. Some of us succeed, some of us don't. Those of us who don't succeed get angry, especially when we see other submissions on it. But the question we are asking ourselfs is, 'Do they deserve it'. Does that submission really deserve to be on the popular reel?
Projects: Building a project in attempt to get onto the reel is difficult and takes alot of skill and effort. You need to plan stuff and you should be building to the best of your ability and if your not putting in enough effort, you don't deserve the attention. Build big too.
Texture Packs: Making a good texture pack is what players like. You need to put in great art and skill. Some guys purchase textures in attempt to make a realistic texture pack, this is necessary if you want to get popular. A huge issue with texture packs on the reel these days is people coming along and editing very little to no textures at all, and uploading them. Sometimes prople take texture packs from minecraftforums.net and upload the to PMC claiming ownership and they get onto the popular reel. This is NOT funny and its a massive problem.
Skins: All you need is the talent and good shading tools etc. If you put in enough time you will make a brilliant skin and you might get on the popular reel. It is important to have the talent for this because if you don't the chances of being on the reel are low.
Servers: Make sure you have friendly and independent staff. Also have frequent events and things the players will enjoy (PVP, Shop). Having good plugins can also boost your servers rating. Try to have reviews of your server and if you can make good plugins yourself, you have a good advantage of having a popular server.
Blogs: To get your blogs noticed talk about current events, news or things that people like. Rants can be enjoying to read so make them long. You need good grammar and use colors. I am a very fast typer and if you are like me you will depend on auto correct or something similar.
Mods: Mods aren't easy to make so don't hate on a mod you don't like. Make mods that don't make the player cheating too much, but also help them. I can't say much about mods because I tried making one before, and it got very confusing so I stopped.

The Reel Today
Today, the reel is filled with Modern houses. These are quite nice when presented nicely and rendered. They don't even require alot of skill.
The other thing that is filling the reel is very poor texture packs. Nowadays people are editing like 5 or less textures putting them up and they get on the popular reel in minutes. What is also happening is people stealing textures from people on minecraftforums.net and putting them on planetminecraft.com claiming ownership. This has to stop!
I am not going to say usernames but I will say what I have seen:
I saw a texture pack that was the exact same as the one I use, I didnt make it but I got it from minecraftforums.net. Somebody was so smart that they got it and put it on PMC claiming ownership and they got on the Popular reel. I immediately reported this.
I saw a project some guy made where he copied the pixels from a tree, and just built them big in minecraft. This really angered alot of people including me, like come on! Anybody can copy pixels.
I saw a gun texture pack that was the same as the default texture pack, but it just had 3 textures changed and it got on the popular reel!

How Is This Making The Reel?
People who are new to planetminecraft.com or minecraft itself (Commonly known as 'Noobs') are diamonding and viewing this stuff thinking its good, while people who are working their As**es of and not getting noticed.
Who Is Getting Hurt Here?
The people who are actually putting in all the effort and skill they have to make a project, texturepack..etc are not getting the attention they deserve. It hurts to spend alot of time on a hard working submission and then not get any attention. I know this because a few weeks back I spent a week of very hard work and planning making my Nuclear Launch Site WW3. It barely got noticed in 'Whats Hot!' It didn't get anywhere near the reel and it made me pretty angry to see all these texture packs and mods that took no effort to make got onto the reel.
What Can Be Done?
There is very little things that can be done in relation to this situation. The most that can be done is to give the Admins and Site moderators more control over what goes onto the reel. For them to approve of the content and submissions that go on it and for them to pick the stuff from 'Whats Hot!'. It should be the Site Moderators and Admins that choose the submissions being displayed, not those new to the game and site/'Noobs'.
I am speaking out for those like me who worked very hard and didn't get the attention we deserved.But don't give up, keep trying because building subscribers can help.
