Khloe sat down in the second to last row of the plane and stared out the window. The fog surrounded the other planes on the runway and swallowed the view of the trees. But something didn’t feel right. Khloe noticed that the plane was silent. As they took off on the redeye flight she couldn’t hear the engines running, and nobody made a peep.
As Khloe pulled out her book from her carry-on, the cabin lights turned off. Isn’t it a little early to turn off the lights? Khloe thought. But she spotted a faint glow across the aisle. She turned her head, and to her surprise, there were two children on fire! Yet they were both eerily staring at her.
“You left us,” the girl accused.
“Why did you leave us?” the boy said as he cocked his head.
Khloe was confused and shocked to see two children on fire speaking to her. What is going on? Khloe wondered fearfully.
The lights turned back on suddenly, and the two children vanished into thin air. Yet, burn marks remained on the backs of the seats where they had been sitting. It was obviously real. The seats were burned. Or was it a dream? No, it couldn’t have been. Surely Khloe would’ve woken up by now.
Khloe sat there paranoid for the next few minutes. She tried to distract herself by reading her book, and eventually she dozed off. When she woke up about an hour later, she gazed back across the aisle while standing up to stretch. As she did, she discovered that nobody else was on the plane. Where did they all go? Her curiosity led her down the aisle to the front of the plane. She opened the cockpit door which was unlocked. TSA would surely not like this! The pilots were missing and nobody was flying the plane. As she looked out the window, she saw it was pitch black - no clouds, no sun, no sky - almost like the plane was flying into a black void. As she spun around in panic, her eyes focused on a familiar faint orange glow. But this time, the glow was concealed behind the curtain in the back galley. Something mysterious began to pull her toward the crackling sound, which reminded her of the many campfires from family trips to Keystone Mountain. As she was floating closer and closer, she became more and more fearful to discover what was behind the shabby divider. As she reached out to pull back the curtain, it opened rapidly to expose the same two children still engulfed in flames.
“Help!” the little boy said, as his skin slowly melted away.
“We’ll die… Don’t leave us!” the girl pleaded, as she lunged at Khloe for help.
Right before the ghastly girl could touch her, the lights flickered back on, and Khloe found herself sitting in her seat again. What just happened? She sat up and didn’t even feel tired even though it was the middle of the night. That could not have been another dream. Khloe stood up in her seat, making sure other people were on the plane. She saw a mom and two little boys in the row ahead of her.
“Give me that back!” the younger one shouted, reaching for the tablet they were sharing.
“I’m older, plus you already had your turn!” the older one argued, as he yanked back the device from the younger one.
Khloe sat back down. She glanced at the seats across the aisle once again making sure the two terrifying children were not there. She continued to read her favorite book, and before long she became enraptured in the story. Before she knew it, the plane quieted down, and everyone became silent.
The lights flickered and silhouettes of the inflamed children appeared in the darkness, but just as quickly as they appeared, they vanished when the lights filled the cabin.
Khloe could barely read the little boy’s lips as the lights continued to pulse on and off.
“Help us,” the boy implored.
The other people on the plane looked confused. One man unbuckled his seatbelt and announced that he was going to check with the pilots about electrical malfunctions.
Just as he reached the cockpit, the starboard engine exploded and violently rocked the plane. People screamed as the plane plunged toward the earth and the lights shattered and burst.
Khloe yanked her seat belt tighter as the plane dipped to the left. I knew something bad was going to happen. I should’ve never taken this flight. I’m going to die.
Khloe closed her eyes, accepting her fate. She took deep breaths trying to ignore the pit in her stomach while tuning out the screams of her fellow passengers.
Her eyes blinked open as the plane landed with a thud on the runway. She looked out the window and saw the sun appearing on the horizon. Everyone began to wake up to gather their belongings to deboard the plane. What just happened? Am I going crazy? She tried to shake it off, but then glanced down into her lap and realized her book, Night Terrors and the Burning Children, was the source of her surreal experience. I’m never taking another redeye flight alone. She grabbed her bag and couldn’t wait to share the story with her parents.
