Rosemary’s Journal

Winter 29

—————

This journal is intended to document my findings regarding a rather peculiar book I discovered on a recent trip. It is entitled Witchcraft and Other Arts, and from my brief flip-through of it, it was written by multiple different authors, or perhaps the knowledge was compiled into one source. Many of the pages are different papers, and almost every page has notes in the margins, all in the same hand. From what I can tell, most of the information in this book is trustworthy. I will write more once I have conducted a more thorough reading.

Spring 3

—————

I’ve studied the book quite a bit in the past few days. The previous owner (I have decided that this book is in fact a collection of pages, most taken out of other books) seems to have been quite interested in the art of necromancy. This is a topic I haven’t been able to find much about, but this goes in-depth about the practice and several methods of reanimation. The main common ingredient is soul sand, unsurprisingly. Fortunately I have a large supply, and I’ve moved my experimenting from my potions room in the manor to the due to this. More updates after further experiments.

Attempts at Reanimating Mouse - Spring 4

-soul sand

-mouse skeleton (roughly complete)

-sculpting tools

-flint and steel

Results - success (?)

I managed to reanimate the mouse, in the most basic sense of the word. It scampered around a bit before collapsing, and afterwards did not respond to any stimuli, despite seemingly still being animated. I will see if there are any notes on this- further testing is required.

Spring 6

—————

After further experimentation and research, it appears some of the materials I require are unobtainable from my current position. While basic level necromancy is doable with the materials I currently possess, what I aspire to do is more advanced and have more specific requirements.

Regarding my previous notes- it appears the previous owner of Witchcraft was not as intrigued or bothered by the seeming lack of a consciousness in reanimated organisms. The notes mention this, specifically on pages about smaller creatures, but as far as I can tell they weren’t bothered by what seems to be the nonpresence of a brain. Again, further testing is required.

Spring 10

—————

Due to the lack of further experimentation I am able to do, I have taken to reading through Witchcraft again. A section of the book that I have taken an interest in covers the Wither. These pages are an amalgamation of scientific reports, folktales and what appears to be a very, very old children’s book. The notes on these pages are far more haphazard. There’s a small section that lists sources that as far as I can tell are not yet in the book- I will have to see if I am able to locate any of this information in the coming days. In the meantime I’ll copy some of the pages from Witchcraft into this journal- it seems to line up with a good deal of my necromancy research.

Wither - Summer 18

Attempt 4 - Sample D (50% concentration)

Reanimation failure

  • Experiment was not successful. Subject did not respond to stimuli. More movement than Samples A and B. Unclear differences from Sample C.

Wither - Summer 21

Attempt 5 - Sample E (80% concentration)

Reanimation inconclusive

  • Subject did not respond to stimuli and entirely dissolved before results were fully recorded. Further experimentation required.

  • Subject has broken loose, is currently contai

Experiment failure.

-Excerpt from Noor’s Book of Rhymes for Children

Wither

First is found in the pig man’s lair

Second is found with a strider’s snare

Third is found on the furthest peak-

Then watch them awake with a piercing shriek!

Spring 15

—————

I’ve located most of the sources listed in the notes I mentioned previously- they line up with the other information in the book. The Wither appears to be an undead creature. All sources I have found state it as having 3 skulls. A few separate accounts mention soul sand in relation to it- I assume it’s similar to reanimation. One source states that contact with the Wither results in a deadly and fast-acting disease, similar to that of the skeletons that haunt Nether Fortresses. I believe there to be a connection between the two.

On another note, I’ve noticed a page in my book has been partially torn out. I assume it’s nothing too important, it’s right in the middle of the astral projection section, between page 243 and 246. I’ve also been studying the herbs section, as I believe I’ve found a way to use them to enhance my necromancy experiments. More research is necessary, but I believe it’ll work. Attending an event in Tuxcity soon, further notes afterwards.

Spring 20

—————

I am pleased to say that after much experimentation and research I have managed to fully reanimate the remains of a mouse. My previous attempts all resulted in failure due to a lack of brain in my specimens, but after doing some research into evokers and vindicators managed to carve a miniature brain for the mouse, and that combined with the herbs I previously mentioned brought the experiment to success. Attached is a copy of my notes from the experiment itself.

Attempts at Reanimating Mouse - Spring 18

-soul sand

-mouse skeleton (roughly complete)

-sculpting tools

-lapis lazuli

-lily-of-the-valley flowers

-flint and steel

Results - success!

Mouse was able to be fully reanimated, and was very responsive. It ran around inside the circle of flowers but seemed hesitant to step over the border. Perhaps it is aware that it would likely collapse without them. My hypothesis regarding lack of a brain was correct- lapis lazuli fixed this problem perfectly. I will research whether these methods can be used in terms of a Wither shortly.

Spring 22

—————

Following my recent breakthroughs regarding necromancy, I’ve turned my attention to my Wither research for the time being. The previous owner of Witchcraft left a note pertaining to it that I’m looking into- something about a temple in the desert. I’m leaving tomorrow and will be taking notes as I go. I hope to learn more about the cultural implications of the Wither, as I believe it could unveil more of the scientific side in turn. Updates after I return.

Spring 30

—————

I returned from my trip this morning. I recovered a chunk of red sandstone that was previously part of a tower on the outside of the pyramid, long since collapsed. On this brick is carved the visage of a Wither. On the interior of the temple it appears it was a library, or a scientific center of some sort. Their writings were carved on sandstone tablets, but from what I could translate the slates I retrieved cover the Wither. One appears to detail a hypothetical method of summoning it, as portions of it clearly read “black sand” and “bone”. This is perhaps the most detailed and credible source I have been able to find thus far.

Obviously the previous owner of my book did not have the opportunity to go to this temple, or at least if they did there is no evidence of it.

Summer 10

—————

I’ve almost done it.

Withers are incredibly similar to other creatures I’ve reanimated, in the sense that they’re built out of soul sand and withered skeleton skulls. The methodology seems almost reminiscent of a ritual.

I’ve almost finished translating the tablet, which I hope will give me some insight into how this creature can be summoned. Until then, I will continue to refine my work. This could be an incredible scientific breakthrough, if I can just get it right.

—————

I burned my experiments and sealed the laboratory before the flames went out.

Withers are incredibly dangerous monsters; it’s no wonder the keepers of the temple abandoned it. They destroy everything around them, stopping at no means until everything is destroyed and every living creature is killed. They destroy towns, entire civilizations wiped out in mere hours. In a previous entry I mentioned a source detailing a withering illness with no cure, and I now suspect the victim to be that of a town demolished by the Wither.

I cannot under any circumstances allow this thing to be summoned.

Fall 3

—————

Currently I sit in the library of my manor. Recently I have felt extremely anxious about the state of my lab, and in the absence of necromancy research to do I have turned my attention to astral projection. It seems fairly simple, though obviously not without its challenges. It “splits”, so to say, the mind and body into different forms. This will be my first experiment regarding this art.

I need to check on my laboratory. Updates when I return, if this works.

—————

Page 244 - ASTRAL PROJECTION

While this art may be convenient and relatively easy to achieve, it does not come without its consequences. In some cases, when the mind is under stress, it is impossible to reunite the mind and body without outside help, causing the witch to remain trapped in the astral plane. For these reasons, it is recommended to only perform these arts accompanied, even if you consider yourself skilled in the craft. Cases of skilled witches becoming trapped in the veil, while uncommon, are not unheard of, and thus this art should be practiced with the utmost caution. Mistakes are fatal.

Spoilers!!! //
I’m so happy the mouse experiment worked. I love how this has such a direct connection to Minecraft but reads not like someone who is playing the game but someone who lives it. I also love the magical aspects, it does make you feel like a witch sometimes, doesn’t it? I appreciate the realism of the wither as well. Anyone who’s played knows that if you make a wither, be at least 50000000 per billion blocks away from any creation you care about (ex/ your house, your dog 😔). I’m very glad Rosemary only read and researched about and never committed to making the wither. I do, however, feel bad for their lab :( I understand why they burned it but still. I kinda wanted to know if you made a bunch of paths of flowers would the mouse be able to live its life possibly? Just set it in a Lily of The Valley field!! I think that’s be a a cute ending for the mouse :> That’s my hc for what happened to it cause I don’t want to think about it being in the lab.
