Do you own a server but it is really hard to get popular? Do you play on a server with the same old same old Factions war, where everyone betrays your faction or your base gets blown up? For the people out there that said yes, read this article

Servers are a very unique feature of Minecraft where players can get together and play Survival, Creative, or a 3rd party division of a server (MineZ, etc.) There have been many people who have put their time into creating a better and more fun experience for Minecraft Multiplayer, like the Bukkit Team and those who make plugins. But 75% of those servers just run the same software from 1 creator! If you go on the server list on PMC, you will mostly see * FACTIONS * RAIDING * PVP * 24/7 * (Insert Violent Prefix)Craft. Since there are so many of those servers, sometimes players will see a server running Factions, and just carry on, even if those servers have a really great community with a dynamic experience. If you have a server that you want to just burst open and spread like wildfire then try a different approach.

Even though Minecraft is a very unique game in and of itself, there are only so many things you can customize on Minecraft without having to download some client. A lot of people on servers will sometimes ask the Owners if they can add new noises like cats meowing, which is impossible with out downloading something. People are looking for a simple server where they can jump in, not have to worry about technical issues, and just right then and there start their adventure. This is a problem for Towny and Factions; you need to gradually build up a town or a base in order to have fun. Over my coarse of looking at servers, the most popular ones are the servers where you can hop on and not worry about making bases or towns. There are thousands of servers that already have Factions/Towny. The player (or customer) is looking for a new and unique experience that they can enjoy! Also, one of the main factors is not worrying about your town being blown up! This is where a lot of servers go wrong. And now, here are a few tips on what to do to fix your problems.

- Be original in a way that invites someone to the server. A great community is awesome, but it might not be enough to kick off your server the way you want.

- Look for ideas from other popular video games or media. A familiar server you all may be acquainted with is MineZ, and that is based off of DayZ. They have many servers, and right now a very big bank.

- Try to reach within your boundaries. Having fresh ideas are great, but sometimes we can't power it because of the boundaries of Minecraft Multiplayer. If you have a fresh idea with it being possible in Minecraft, go for it.

- Learn coding or ask a developer to make your idea. This is one of the main things you need. Command Blocks help a lot with this, but their boundaries are little. It would be very impressive to make a machine gun for a bow with command blocks. A developer is far above and at the boundaries where Minecraft is, so they will be able to create your idea. Although don't try to do this and think you'll get away with him/her not getting credit or admin on a server.

- Have discounts and reasonable donator perks. Not everyone can donate $100 for a new spangled weapon. Try doing $15 dollars, or $10 dollars for a rank with great benefits. There is a balance you must keep, and sometimes having 20 donators donating $15 is better than 2 donators donating $100.

- Advertise. Hey! With the new money you have from discounts and such, you can advertise. This is one of the main goals. Try websites like Minestatus or even here. Posting on PMC everyday can ship out the old players and bring in new ones.

- Have it be interesting. Not many enjoy a server very long where you just kill zombies 24/7 on the same map with no cool weapons or perks. Have traveling, adventure, economic fluency, and even in some rare cases keep it to local chat so it seems realistic.

- Look professional. Some servers will ban people on the spot because Jennifer told Christi that Ashley was griefing, and the owner might be the one to ban them. The owner is like the producer of a movie. They stand in the back, and get money but are still there for their community. This will sound weird, but if the owner talks a lot, a lot of players won't listen to him. If an owner talks not much and then says something, everyone will recognize what he said as something not casual to the server and follow it.

- Have an original name. If your suffix to your server name ends in "Craft" you're doing it wrong (not many servers are successful with this suffix, but some are). Try something mystical that draws players towards your server. Realms, Gaming, and Town all work well and your customer is subconsciously drawn to your server.

I hope these tips help you in getting to your goal of having/playing a great server that's fun and better than the rest!

Great guide and some good points. I wanted to set up a server that I would like to play on, aside from the regular survival server that I help admin. Given that there are as you say, so many of the same, I wanted something specific and fun, so I established a Skyblock server with a couple of minigames.

I worked very hard to build the economy in a way that would directly reward the risk of building sky high, and make long term participation worthwhile. As I'm frequently busy, I also wanted a way of automatically ranking players, so I coded 50 achievements to handle that, again directly tied to skyblock and the economy.

I'm really pleased with the result, because like I said at the start, I wanted to build a server I would be happy to play on, beyond ordinary survival, factions, or pvp; and I think that's the most important thing - build what makes you happy, or you'll lose interest.
