Hello, I thought I'd share some pretty useful tips on managing a staff team for your server. Having owned over 6 servers throughout my career, I have learned from lots of mistakes and I hope to share them with you.

The first thing you will need to do is figure out what kind of staff positions you will give out (ex: Moderator, Supervisor, Administrator, Developer etc). What I like to do to stay organized is write down things on paper or word. You will want to have a list of the staff ranks, and a list of permissions for each group. (permissions is what types of commands they can use)
For the different ranks you will need a permissions plugin which are pretty simple to learn (I recommend bPermissions or PermissionsEX)

Now when managing staff, you will need to be in contact with them at all times. The last thing you want, is for an admin to disappear from the server for a month. Skype is a great way of contact, even if you do not have a microphone, however you can also use email.

Make sure you set yourself some rules before hiring a bunch of people, whether it's a certain age group you are looking for, or a required amount of skills. Don't let a whole bunch of 10 year old's run your server.

You can basically give staff to whoever you wish, but it's better creating a way to apply via forum, email or website that way you can really get to know the player better.
TIP: Never sell staff ranks, some rich 12 year old will buy and wreck your server.

Alright, you have a healthy amount of staff and you need to make sure nobody's flying under your radar. I highly recommend borrowing or buying a second minecraft account for this, or you can just go through the logs. But checking the logs once a week can chop the amount of moderators that abuse their commands in half!
Make sure you check for people who give out free items, falsely ban people or kill people in creative mode. They will ruin your server and scare off players.

No matter how much you trust people. do not ever give commands such as /op or worldedit tools. Even your best friend will screw over your server. Always make sure you are on top of your staff, because you would not want to log on one day and be banned. A good way to test their abilities is to tell a friend to log on and start breaking some rules. See how the staff reacts without you being online and watching.

Anyways, I hope I helped your server out! If you have any comments/tips please drop one down in the comment section below :)
