I was sucked in through the Ender-man’s portal, and emerged… in the overworld.

I left the portal, ruined and awful and burning, behind in its cave,

I took in the sweet air, smelling of apple and old oak trees. The blue sky, warm and distant sun, the beautiful, infinite ocean.

I must have been beaming stupidly.

Of course; Sqi-eks had finally let us go, something that made me and Grace both very happy, though she didn’t want to admit it.

“I recognize this place,” I mused aloud. “The trees are different, thicker, but this is just south of First Docking.”

“Which means…” Grace said, “that the village is close!”

“Yes!” I began to run towards it, but Grace stopped me.

“We need to eat.”

Grace grabbed the chorus fruit.

I clenched my lips closed.

“We have to eat it,” Grace said. “It’s the only thing keeping us alive.”

I stomached it down, and found myself at First Docking.

“How did we get here?” I muttered, but Grace gave no response.

The village was smaller than I remembered, though it had a much larger castle.

“Greetings!” Grace said. “I am glad to return to… the Village-of-the-green-trees-and-blue-river-by-the-sea!”

The villagers stared at us. I thought they didn’t understand.

Then they did something I had never expected.

They drew swords and bows and axes, and attacked us.

Grace got ready to… I don’t know, punch them to death?.

“Don’t you recognize me?” She asked.

“No.” Said one.

“Wait! She is a woman!” Said another.

“Grace the Great,” I said.

“We know no one by that name.” Said an elder. “But, as the race of men wanes, you may stay here as long as you like. Stock up on food and weapons.”

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience,” apologized one, “we don’t see your kind often.”

After eating, we walked across the river.

The Lord’s house was gone now.

“What the hell happened?” Grace asked.

“The portal,” I said, “time must work differently there, and we stayed down there for years and years. Enough time has passed for the villagers to forget us.”

I thought of my family in the far lands… they could all be dead now, with me and Grace being the last echelons of the Empire.

I wept, and became depressed.

But I wasn’t going to let that depression weigh me down.

I rebuilt the Lord’s house, though smaller and wirh less furnishings.

I tamed a horse, equipped it with armor, and set off, west again, towards the Empress, if she was still alive, or her portal if she wasn’t.

I came upon the desert, and rode past a pyramid.

“They’re rebuilding it,” Grace said, “look! It has new paint and everything.”

I thought of the black skull in there and the vision it had given me, of the Nether.

“Who are you?” Someone yelled.

I looked behind me, and saw a man, dressed in blue and cyan, with brown skin and dark hair.

He’s speaking Notchish. My language.

“You first!” Grace screamed back.

“I’m… Steve?”
