Day 1
"War… War never changes" was one of the quotes that always came to mind when thinking about the end of the world, at least according to my dad. It was always an idea that a country or a group will try to invade a different one and it will spark a nuclear exchange wiping out almost everyone. Well, what happened, in reality, was quite different… The world didn’t crumble due to war nor did it get destroyed due to humanity’s lust for resources. What killed, or rather transformed close to every person on earth was a bacterium. It wasn’t even created with malicious intent but rather it was an accident, a scientist working in an industrial lab unintentionally modified the wrong sequence of genes in a bacterium and then got accidentally infected with it. That pandemic happened 30 years ago and I don’t remember it as I wasn’t born yet, but I have heard stories about it from my parents.
My streak of not getting bitten for over 20 years of my life has just come to a close as I managed to get bitten on my ankle today in the morning. Sadly, while I just got one bite, my parents met a worse fate. I haven’t really seen other people besides them, although I saw a few travellers when they stumbled onto our camp. I have heard from them that there are big communities of people called sanctuaries but I’ve always thought of them as more of a myth because they reminded me of the old cities, like the one my family used to camp in, but they were all destroyed. I have also heard of the myth that the sanctuaries had a cure to the plague which can supposedly stop someone from transforming after they got bit. Well, I decided that now is the best time to test if that myth is true because I have nothing to lose. At the same time, I decided to make a diary of my journey as I think it would be the only way to make my life have any meaning if someday, a historian finds my diary and uses it to see the world from the eyes of the freshly bitten person. Anyways I started my journey by packing up the rest of the supplies I had and walking north towards where I heard a sanctuary might be.
