The Dragon's Child Diary

Chapter 1 The first day (part 2)

Just one second everything went black, and I tought I fainted before realising I got teleported. I quickly stepped out of the circle before Echo would be teleported on top of me. I looked around, a lot more students where standing around a similar court as the one in the village. The only thing missing was the village. Instead there was a road that led to the acadamy. I never could've imagined it, everything was made out of bricks and sandstone. It was square, but towers and courts were circular. Everywhere there were fire patterns. The only thing that wasn't red or yellow or just plain sand were the palm trees around small oasises. A massive amount of students walked towards the building, the First Basic Year was gathered at the furthest end of the circle, and devided in 40 classes of about 25 students. Each class was labeled with a roman number, I was in class 11 (XI).
"Which class is yours?" My heart skipped one beat when Echo's voice came from right behind me. "mine is class 11" She said, like she didn't even notice she scared me.
"Mine too" I said, a bit relieved. "At least I have one friend there now, or else I would'veo ¦ I had to be around strangers all the time." I nearly said I would've been silent and scared to talk all the time, and I didn't really want Echo to know I was such a loner. But when I looked at her I only saw her smile a bit weird.
"You mean likeo ¦ you're my friend?"
"You don't say you never had friends?" I said, my voice a pitch higher out of surprise. Echo looked at her feet and blushed again.
"Well... I only lived inside the castle when I was little, I had private teachers and the only time I could go outside was for a ball or party. I don't want to call the maids like friends, they were nice but not real friends." I felt sorry for her again, she should've been really lonely when she was little. I couldn't think about it, it was like being a living puppet.
"That's terrible, you should've been really lonelyo ¦"
"Well, when I was twelve I ran away to my uncle, I always liked him. He teached me really usefull things and made sure I could study."
"That's good to hear" I said, but we reached the sign where our class gathered. It didn't really seem like a good time to talk about subjects like that.
The mentor-teacher of Class 11, Sir Miyar, was a man around the age of 40. He still looked strong, but time was catching up a bit on his body. Not like it made him less jolly and happy, it was hard to dislike him. After all students arrived we walked to the gate of the academy. It was high, and a crown of never-ending flames decorated the archway. After the gate the road became a lane with palms on the edge and a lot more decorated; in the middle ran a thin line of fire, covered with glass, and on the edges it had a fire-like pattern from red and yellow stone. At a certain point there was a big oasis and around it was a court, around the oasis was another summoning circle.
"For the students who don't have a brother or sister here," Sir Miyar started the explanation. "All the water you see here is summoned from the bottom of Lake Aquilem, or how others may know it, Aquaris Academy. It gets refreshed constantly and the highest known temperature of the water is 15 degrees, after 59 minutes, when you're really lucky." Some of the brave students tried to see if that was true by putting their fingers or hands in it, only to pull it back again and saying it was really cold indeed.
"My brother once told me that sometimes the water is so cold it freezes when summoned." Echo whispered in my ear, I guess I can only believe her about it. I never saw so much magic all at once, the thing was that not even 5% of the civilization could use magic. Most of the time everyone just used their brains and worked hard. Magicians were like the most powerful and responsible guards of our world. It wasn't something to take light, you got beaten up, wounded, called a demon by the people you tried to protect and all that. Most of the time you putted your life on the line for a small amount of bounty and the idea of being a good person. But I'm dwelling of the subject once more. Either way, there were 3 more roads from the oasis; straight ahead was the real academy, and on the left and right were the girls and boys dorms. It was strictly forbidden for boys to go to the girls dorm after 8 o'clock and the other way around unless with special permission. At least in the basic dorms, in the advanced class you could sleep with someone of your choice in one room. First we went to the boys dorms. The dorms all had 2 floors, at ground level there was a kitchen, dining hall, bathroom, room 1 to 25 and a place to hang out. Upstairs there were more sleeping rooms, in total 100. Room 41 to 54 was reserved for Class XI, my number was 47. All rooms were decent and had a bookcase, table and chair, bed with red sheets and a small wardrobe. In theory everything you would need while studying. We didn't get the chance to put our belongings there yet.
"After dinner and the introduction from Lord Fyron in The Burning Halls you will have a bit of spare time to talk with each other and put your belongings in your room." Sir Miyar said while we walked outside again. The girls dorms had the same facilities as the boys ones but was build in a different shape with a courtyard. Room 13 to 25 was for the girls and echo got room 22. The rooms were exactly the same, except for bedsheets being red instead of yellow. After the dorms a tour of the academy followed. Each wing of the building had a different purpose:

- The Southern wing: Practical magic (like defense against incoming attacks)
- The Eastern wing: Theoretical and Long-Time magic (like self-sustaining torches)
- The Northern wing: Non-magical skills (like cooking and making fire with iron & flint)
- The Western wing: Armed Skills (All sort of long and close range weapons)
- The Basement: All sorts of lesser and major demons and creatures were kept there for real practice (including an underground arena)

The most impressive part was the basement, Sir Miyar showed us the most impressive creatures, including a demon as big as a house that was chained with gigantic chains to the wall.
"This is Red Lord, everyone who makes it to the final year of Advanced Studies has to fight him." Most students only watched it while being struck by horror, including me. It was terrifying, roaring violently and pulling at his chains constantly. Every now and then he bursted into flames, spraying a massive amount of sparks towards the walls and his chains.
"Isn't it dangerous to keep something so dangerous close to so much students?" Asked a girl with an absurdly pale face from horror.
"Do you see those lines on the floor and walls?" Sor Miyar said while pointing at the gigantic and very complicated circle. "That's called a Hell's Crown, the most powerful summoning circle known yet, allowing interdimensional teleportation, as soon as one of the chains breaks Red Lord here gets pulled back to his dimension. But it is hard to get him back, so we keep him in this prison." The girl still didn't seem to trust it, but Sir Miyar guided the group away before she could ask anymore questions.
"Idiots, keeping demons below a school." She mumbled to me while following the group.
"Well, I suppose they know what they're doing." I said, I didn't really like her attitude that much. She acted like she already knew everything. Luckily she walked away without caring much about it. I expected Echo to say something, like she had done with everything worth saying something about. But when I looked she still stood by the iron bars of the prison. She didn't seem to be scared by the demon.
"What is it Echo?" I asked, but she didn't react to it. I walked towards her and called her again, but when she didn't seem to react I grabbed her shoulder and shook her a bit.
"Huh? What?" She said, she looked a bit confused.
"Why didn't you react?" I asked a bit concerned.
"Well... I... I... My mother told me that demons were humans before, but they went bad and now they're bound to terribly deformed bodies, barely aware of their human soul." I had never heard that story, where I came from demons were pure evil, there was no story behind them. They should be annihilated.
"Do you feel sorry for them?" I asked a bit interested in such a different view.
"No, not really. I just wondered how much terrible deeds this demon did before being punished." She said it with a cold and harsh undertone. I wondered if she even hated them more because they once were humans but committed horrible crimes. I just thought of them as evil, without anything like a soul, so it was hard to really hate them for that. They didn't feel or think, so they didn't really realize they were wrong.
"We should get back to the group, we're going to get in trouble if we stay here." I said, it would be really troublesome if someone found us here between all these demons. She nodded and we walked back to the group. Luckily Sir Miyar was too busy with the others to notice us.
The tour finished in The Burning Halls. It was so big everyone fitted in easily, ten long tables for the students stood on each side of the middle. At the furthest end stood two tables on a small platform, and before those tables stood a glass tank with lava. On top of it stood a man. He wore an armor made of gold and decorated with rubies as if someone just sprayed them on him. He wore a crown of fire. Sir Miyar guided us to a far away table, before walking to the teachers' tables. It took a while before all the students were inside, and everyone was talking to each other. Echo asked me about my speciality in fire magic.
"Well, I think I'm good in practical magic. I don't suck at other things. It's just that theoretical magic seems boring because you never get close to the action and non-magical skills speaks for itself." Non-magical skills weren't the reason I got into a magic academy after all.
"That's true, but long-term magic can make a spear or sword way more powerful" Said a tall, black girl that sat on the other side of the table.
"Yeah, but you have to enhance it for a long time, and steel eventually gets dull from the continuing heat." Echo replied, she really seemed to know a lot about more advanced magic already. I felt stupid again, I only learnt really minor things in school. We didn't even have subclasses.
"I still think long-term magic is better if it comes to massive damage at once, while practical magic is for quick battles"
"I don't know for sure, long-term magic takes much preparation, like drawing the Absorption Circles to gather enough power. While practical magic requires more physical endurance because you have to get close. It's basically the everlasting war between long ranged combat and close combat." I decided I better remembered the things Echo and the other girl said. Meanwhile everyone had arrived in the hall. The man on top of the platform started to talk.
"Welcome all, I'm glad to see that all of you have made it here safe. This year we have gained a whole lot of fresh talent, give the first basic year a warm welcome, and I mean fire-like warm!,o To be honest I had never heard so much noise, suddenly 7000 students started to clap and scream. The mood in the hall became really good, and all the tention that had been there before was gone. o There are two more things I want to tell you. The first thing: Study hard, dono t be fooled, because here only people who master fire will pass the exams. The second thing: That doesno t mean we shouldno t enjoy some moments, so our cooks have done their very best to make it perfect. Enjoy your meals!o The man pointed with two arms at the doorway and one hundred servers came trough it. Putting dishes and crockery sets at the table. The food looked delicious, it was nothing like back at home, the smell of it was already enough to make me as hungry as possible.
