Hey lads and gents,

as long as I'm waiting for Paril's and Zaralith's reply on my mod (that I can't post yet), I gonna tell you something about a topic which really annoys me, and that's the difference between a copy and inspiration.

At first, a copy is not a copy. You can simply press CTRL+C and you have your copy, but it's not like typing it by yourself. For example: you have to create a text about the history of the interwebs. There are two possibilities: you can simply copy the text you found or you can think about it and use the text you found as a pattern. That's the same with mods and builds in Minecraft.

A perfect example are the mods "TooManyItems" and "NotEnoughItems". NotEnoughItems is NOT a copy of TooManyItems. Why? Because ChickenBones (the author of NEI) used TMI as a pattern and added his own "touch". I know that there was a conflict at the very beginning of NEI whether it's a copy or not, but ChickenBones won. Another example would be these Sky Survivals. As long as there are no exact copies of some other maps, there won't be a conflict between the two parties.

The problem is that a lot modders and builders are trying to use this as a advantage. Nobody can set a line where you can say: "This is a copy and this isn't", so they will continue making skin stealers and lapis tools mods. In my opinion they need to recognize by themselves that there is a border somewhere, but a lot don't.

Some people wonder then why their work isn't "featured" enough. I can tell you why. Because it's not original. Someone had an idea like this before and noboby is interested in this anymore. But if you add a cool new feature or something ... who knows. It might help you out a bit.

Let me know your opinion in the comments. Where would you set the border between copy and inspiration?

- Copying would literally be pixel for pixel, or line of code for line of code the exact same.

- Inspiration would be - Oh damn, I like the way this bad boy rolls.. but I think I could add a little flare to make it something that would fit me better.

That doesn't mean you can't be an inspired dick if you are malicious.. and for example make a NEI/TMI inspired mod in the effort to steal summadat (Ad link removed). If you copied their exact design without adding your own twist, then it would go back into copying.

Such a fine line...
