The Spaceman and the Dwarf

Boom. Crash. Skid. Crawl. It had all happened in a matter of seconds. Xephoso s spacecraft had hit a thermal pocket and malfunctioned. Suddenly the planet was much closer and didno t seem as tranquil. My spacecraft hits the ground and I emerge. I check my body to see if I am injured and I didno t suffer a single scratch. Amazing. Until I examine the landscape around me. Darkness has fallen and the once cheerful and brilliant landscape has been turned into a dark fog. I can see some zombie begin to emerge from the caves and other creatures have begun to crawl from their hiding spots. I decide to make a run for the nearest settlement, but with this terrain, ito ll probably take all night. So, I decide to take the o fasto way. This involves a run at full speed. As soon as Io m away from the spacecraft, all the zombies decide that I might make a tasty meal of flesh, the giant spiders begin their rapid crawl towards my position, and the skeletons begin to shoot their arrows. I am sprinting through the forest now, dodging spiders that fall from the trees and swinging blindly at the zombies that emerge into my peripheral view. In fact I am so pre-occupied batting back the spiders and zombies that I dono t notice the green monster creeping upon me from the darkness. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Boom! And like that I am flung forward in a spiral arch and instead of hitting ground I fall even farther downwards and land softly on the bottom. It is morning; I wake up to see that I have fallen down a VERY deep hole, and that the landing should have killed me. Excepto ¦it didno t? I turn around to examine the rest of the hole for other landing places and become face-to-face with a very angry, short, man.

o Do yeh normally fall on peopleso heads like that?o demanded the stout man. o Noo ¦I fello ¦do you know why this hole is right here?o I asked kindly. o Of course I do, I made it! My nameo s Honeydew and Io m the best digger in the whole world!o o Thato s great. My nameo s Xephos. Do you think that digging holes like this is a little bito ¦ I dono t knowo ¦ dangerous?o I asked. o I dono t really think so; I mean digging holes is all I really know how to do. Io m a dwarf as you can see by my size.o He replied. o I believe that it might be nicer to get somewhere safer for the nighto ¦ I dono t feel safe with the thought of something explosive or hungry falling on my head!o And with that, the Honeydew led me down a dark tunnel. He placed torches on the walls to light the way and at the end of the tunnel there was an oddly placed wooden door. Above the door was a small wooden sign that said o Honeydewo s Holmeo . When we entered I almost fell back in amazement. His home was an extreme contrast to what I expected it to be. Instead of a dugout hole filled with trinkets, it was an extravagant hall filled with many different gems and pieces of luxury. The floor was adorned in wool rugs and cowhides while the ceiling shone down upon us with a rare glow from the stone. It was one giant room but it was very nice. There were paintings of homely landscapes and bookcases full of books from a long time ago. It was indeed a nice change and drew from the fact that I was indeed, stuck here on this planet.

While I had stood there marveling at the entirety of Honeydewo s subterranean house, he had walked over to a kitchen area and began preparing some food. He began asking me questions as scents of mushroom stew and pork chops began to breeze travel towards me. I told him how I landed and my o plano to escape to a settlement on the planet. I then got to the part about the fall into the hole and he knew the rest. He finished the cooking of the meal and served us at a dining table made of gold. At the table I asked him about any of the inhabitants of the planet. To which he replied; o There were once many dwarfs on this planet, but there was a really bad disease called Delirious Morbidity years ago that turned many dwarfs into zombies after a single bite. That is why you saw so many zombies last night. I manage to avoid them when I can however, it is safer for me to remain down here and continue digging holes.o o So is there possibly any places left or survivors that are zombie free?o He replies saying o The strange thing about zombies is that they die in the sunlight and only come out in the day time. So, there really is no threat of zombies but they can be extremely tricky when it comes around night time. So, yeah, there should be a town a couple miles away. I believe ito s called Mistral City but it may be overcome with zombies. If youo re serious about leaving this planet I suggest that you venture the trip and see if they have any supplies for getting you back into space.o I start to ponder the thought of being able to leave. Unfortunately, I dono t have much time because Honeydew has stood up and is equipping himself with a pickaxe and some weapons. o Where are you going?o I ask. o Ito s time to go into the mines and get some supplies! If we get lucky, we may even find some diamonds!o

Honeydew equips us the best he can for our voyage into the caves. We wear leather suits and backpacks that could fit almost anything. We pack torches, spare pickaxes, food, and ladders. Lastly, Honeydew hands me a sword made of gold. It shines magnificently in the torchlight and hilt is of polished wood. Honeydew says o I made that last week; Io m all out of gold for now so weo ll have to search in the mines.o He opens a hatch in the floor and jumps through. I cautiously walk over, being careful not to fall down the hole. o Friend? Are you there?o I call downwards. o Well? Are you going to come down here or not? There areno t any elevators if thato s what youo re wondering.o I hear from far below. I peer over the edge and see a ladder going about 50 feet downwards into a chasm. Honeydew is already at the bottom and waits absentmindedly chewing on a pork chop. I begin to ascend at a safe and slow pace. Once I reach the bottom I give a o thumbs upo to Honeydew and we begin to journey through the caves and tunnels underground. We run into some iron ore in a wall and begin to mine some of it out. As Honeydew gets halfway through mining the iron out, I hear a noise from behind us. It is not an echo of a rock falling or a rat scrambling around on the floor. It is a long and loud moan that shakes me to my very core. o ZOMBIE!o Honeydew screams as I draw my sword in haste. There is a zombie nearby and it definitely knows that we are here. o We must find it and terminate it.o Honeydew says. o We have business down here and I would rather not have a zombie interrupting us.o He pulls out his sword and we start to head down the tunnel. He places torches carefully as we continue in the direction that the moan came from and suddenly, a green-fleshed arm claws out of the shadows and a zombie follows behind. o Cut off its head! Zombies are unable to function without a head!o Honeydew yells, as I start to swing wildly at it to keep it back. The dwarf severs the right arm but the left is still able to do damage. I manage to disconnect its left leg as I swing blindly at it. It collapses to the ground. I tumble backwards, trip on a stone, fall down, and now it is the zombie and I lying on the ground together. It starts to writhe in my direction clawing towards me. I scream to Honeydew o Get it quickly before it kills me!o Before I know it, the zombieo s head is gone. There is nothing left, it has ceased to exist. What is left is a headless body. The arm has laid still and I can feel my own heart pounding vociferously. o Now thato s how you stop a zombie!o Honeydew exclaims. o Are you okay?o I nod asking him for some time to get myself together and my head falls back to rest on the stone floor. After a few minutes I get back up and we head back to the iron ore that we had found before the clash with the deceased zombie. Honeydew mines it as I check the clock that we had brought down with us. It is now night time above ground and we decide to have supper. o Dinnero is actually some mushroom stew. I dig into it with a spoon while Honeydew talks about how he found the mushrooms. o Well, theyo re not that easy to find. I mean, you dono t normally just go to the grocery to get them. I found them in one of these caves here and harvested them myself. It wasno t easy; I think I had to decapitate a couple of zombies before the mushrooms had finished growing. But I managed to get it done in the end.o I can tell that he is trying to shake the trauma of a zombie attack and it helps. He really just thinks of zombies as a day-to-day annoyance. I mean, he barely even panicked during the skirmish with the zombie earlier. I decide with myself that honeydew is a great dwarf to be with during a zombie apocalypse.

Now that we are full of mushroom stew we must ascend back into the caves. We go very far down, past the beheaded zombie, and even further. Eventually we come upon a faint light around a bend. We turn the corner and there is a lava pool the size of a lake directly in front of us. Honeydew hands me a bucket of water and tells me to be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS when we walk around the side of it. So, I begin to walk around it when he rope in my bag snags on a rock out cropping and starts to hold me back. o Quick cut the rope before it pulls you into the lava!o Honeydew screams. I quickly cut the rope before I fall into the lava and I watch as it tumbles into the lava and burns up instantaneously. o Dono t worry, we probably wono t need it anywayso I reply once I get across to the other side. After the dangerous crossing we continue onwards mining coal and iron every once and awhile that we are able find it. We are really looking for treasure and dungeons but they remain hidden to us. But then, we see it. It is a glimmer in the darkness. Our torches reflect against something in the wall and we get a magnificent yellow color back. o Gold Ore!o Honeydew announces at the top of his lungs. I begin to run towards it when Honeydew pulls me back and throws me to the ground. o What was that for?o I ask him questioningly. o You almost fell into that chasm right there.o And then I see it. I was not even three feet away from falling down an abyss that seemed to never end. Honeydew lit another torch and I could not see the bottom at all. It was a void that had almost nearly consumed me. o Thanks for saving me. How did you know see that so fast?o He replies saying something about dwarfs having superior eyesight in caves or something but I decided that I was just caught in the moment. o Hey how do you think we can get across? I mean, we just lost the ropes and we probably wono t find this opportunity again.o I ask him. Unfortunately he has already thought of an answer and is removing his backpack and his armor. o We will have to jump now wono t we?o Honeydew says with a grin on his face. I think to myself whether it is worth it. Ito s a five foot jump but the landing is at least a foot higher than where I am standing right now. I begin to remove my backpack and armor. Will I ever make it to Mistral city to find a spacecraft? I remove the rest of my heavy armor and take a few steps back and watch Honeydew take a running start. He leaps and grabs onto the ledge to pull himself up. o Can you make it!?o I ask him hurrying over to give him assistance if he may fall. He manages to get over the edge with a grunt and says to me; o Quick pass me the pickaxe before we forget! I would hate to have to make the jump again.o I grab the pickaxe and throw it to him. o I guess I dono t have to jump now do I?o Thato s when I could not have been more wrong. I hear a noise behind me and turn around. A green being comes around the corner, it is the same thing that had exploded and launched me into this situation in the first place. o Oh crap! Run Xephos, those things explode if they get close enough to you!o I decide there and then that I would much rather jump then stay behind and get destroyed by the creeper. I take a deep breath and sprint towards the jump zone. Then, I make the jump of my life.
