Hello and welcome fellow minecrafters! Now, I'm sure you were in a situation when you really wanted to get onto a role-playing minecraft server, but when it comes to creating your character, your stumped. Well, I certainly have, so when I got rejected a few times, I sat down and thought... What Really makes a good character?

Well, my first tip would be... Visualise your character. This means having a mental image of who your character is, what he does, how he (or she!) acts. Because on that Rp server, it's you who is going to essentially become that character, so visualising every little detail really goes the extra mile and makes for a more enjoyable Rp experience. 'Course, thats hard to do, so its good to have a sort of plan when it comes to character creation. Feel free to edit this plan to suit your needs. Remember, this is just a rough guideline.

Step 1- Appearance
Some people would say this isn't really all that important. But I say it is, as it's you who is going to step in your characters shoes, so may as well make him look the way you want to. As I said before, visualisation is the key to success. Try thinking of the type of character you would like to play as. Does he have blue, or brown eyes? Is his hair black, brown, or a mixture of both? Really, these details are up to you, but after the basics (and of course the minecraft skin.) you need to start thinking a bit deeper. Is your character big and buff, or small and agile? Is he battle-scarred, or never really been in a fight? Maybe you would like your character to be a warrior, and if so, which appearance would suit him best? It is also a very good idea to check out the lore of the server you are going to be going on, just to make sure your character corresponds with the story of the server. Remember, visualising your character goes a long way to getting whitelisted on that Rp server you always wanted to get on.

Step 2- Personality
So you got your characters looks, but now its time to sort out what kind of guy is on the inside. Frankly, this one may be even more important, as it decides how your character interacts with the world, and others. This one is really for personal choice. It can be difficult deciding what kind of character you want to play... Will you be a stealthy thief? Or a tragic hero? Luckily the job is made slightly easier by the fact you just finished the appearance, so think about that. A huge, brawling warrior who likes to sort things out by force can hardly be expected to sneak around, pickpocketing and stealing, or trying to negotiate peacefully to sort out a fight. They would be expected to be loud and reckless. Likewise, a thief or stealthy character who is maybe quite small and agile probably not go head on in a fight, straight into the thick of things. Same goes for age, that more experienced warriors would be more confident than, say, a young teenager who is grasping a sword for the first time. (Then again, he may be extra reckless). Visualise your character, and think how his appearance would hold his personality. (and vice-versa, might I add).

Step 3- Biography/Backstory
Probably the most difficult one, and almost all Rp servers ask for it. A detailed backstory that explains your character, and everything he got up to. The reason this one is most difficult is because it is hard to write a full Bio about a person you barely know...er...created. Luckily, most of the time you don't need to list every single event your character had before you started playing. Just the major ones will do. The general golden rule I follow with this, is to work from a really early age, up to the age my character is now. As for what events, for that, it is generally a good idea to read the server lore, which might give you some ideas.

However, it might also be a good idea to write about things that you can expect someone of a given age to experience. Say your character is 5, and he has an accident. He probable won't remember it from such an early age, but his parents might, so put that in. ((Describe accident in detail)...or at least, my parents tell me.) Oh, and speaking of parents, never, EVER try writing the' avenging parent's deaths' story. It may look simple to write, but after the sheer number of people who tried the same thing, I just wouldn't recommend it. It is much better to come up with something original and interesting, so avoid the vengeance story.

Another thing to write about in a Bio is Family. Not only does it show you understand your character, it also expands your Bio, and makes for a more enjoyable Rp experience. Think, does your character have any siblings? Maybe he has grandparents, does he know them well? Perhaps he has a long lost uncle who went away long ago, and your character is searching for him? I find it helps to make a list of all the members of your characters family, and think about who would be interesting to write about. Perhaps when your character was 5 is was his Brother that had the accident? Again, visualisation is very important, you need to be able to feel what is going on, to see that mental picture of your character when he was 5, and describe the accident that happened with detail. I ten d to almost always pick age 5, sometimes younger, and then just pick out random dates until you get to your characters age. (e.g write about him aged 3, 5, 8, maybe 11, 14, 19, 25 etc.) It is usually a good idea to associate the events (especially as your character gets older) with the lore of the server.

Step 4- Rp Example
This one is perhaps the most important one of the lot. This is where you really bring your character to life. As with all the above, it is a good idea to visualise how your character will react to the current situation. And of course, you need to decide (more often than not) the current situation your character finds himself in. It is important to consider all the possibilities of your character reacting the way he will, and also to consider the reasons and motives behind his actions, and how he brings his actions into effect. Allow me to explain. Say, your character is calling somebody over in a bar filled with people. He might say something generic like " Come over here ". 'Course, the bar's full of people, so he would have to shout. Therefore, it becomes " Come over here! ". Your character may also not like the person in question, or may be inquiring that he stole something. It all depends on the circumstance. In this case, it may become seething like " Come over here you thieving (whoever person in question is) ". See? It can all change depending on your characters motives. Dialect can also be useful. For example, " Oi, come o'er 'ere, ya thieving little (Person)" would suggest a pirate-like individual, whereas " I demand at once you show yourself here this instant thief!" would suggest an official of posh like character. Generally, try to make your Rp example full of action, rather than a regular day at the shop buying supplies.

Hope this little tutorial helped, and thanks for your time! If this helped, please consider sharing with me a diamond, as it would really make my day :) Thanks, the best.

Ps. I hope you make it onto that Rp server you want to get on.
