Hello! Welcome to a tut for shading!
I will be covering a blog/topic on how to "properly" shade skins!
Before you do ANY of these steps, please note that I am using Paint.NET as the program for creating skins. I will always be using this and I personally think it is one of the best.
Step 1.) Get a skin to start from.
*I use steve as the default layout, but you can actually use anything.

Step 2.) Color your skin with any color, but dont try to shade yet.
*I will make it just a suit or something to keep it simple!

Step 3.) Get a palette of colors
*I am going to be using: Dark grey palette; Red palette; and white palette.

Step 4.) Get a B&W Palette.
*Just get black, place it, then get white, place it.
Step 5.) Use the color picker tool and pick a color on the palette, then turn the transparency down to about 40 - 50, then color in the parts you want to be shaded.

Then color it in, like this!

We are not done yet, though.
Step 6.) Get your black or white color out, then turn the transparency down to 4. Then color in what you want to be shaded.
*The end result!!!:
