Hello there!  Gray Remnant here!  This week was an especially impressive week for projects here on PMC.  I think you guys are really going to like this!

undefined

This week, there were a lot of really promising structures.  They ranged from the modern to the medieval, from the innovative to the downright scary.  But ultimately, the winner this week was something just plain massive.  The best structure of the week was the City of Montana, created by IGWaffleMouth.

undefined

One of the questions that’s probably most prominent in your mind right now is something like: “how long did this take to build?”.  Luckily, there’s a finite answer to that question, and it’s 2 and a half years.  How someone sits on something like this for that long is beyond me.  And as if 2 and a half years wasn’t long enough, we’re probably going to be waiting another 2.5 years because according to IGWaffleMouth, this project is only 55% done.  Yeah.

undefined

But enough with that, I now face the daunting task of describing this behemoth to you.  Montana is one of three cities in the Invalid Metropolis project (perhaps you’ve heard of it).  This city is further subdivided into 6 districts, all of which have their own unique style of architecture.  Midtown resembles a sort of cross between New York City and Chicago, Uptown bears a few traits that are similar to San Francisco, and Little Italy resembles- well you get it.

undefined

Rural outskirts, theme parks, subway systems, underground infrastructure, and incredible skyscrapers are only an abridged list of things you can find in this map.  Oh, and did I mention that around 30-40% of the buildings have interior furnishings?  That’s insane, considering the sheer volume of unique buildings.

undefined

There’s something really stunning about the amount of effort and detail that went into each individual piece of architecture.  Nothing was done in haste, and everything was treated with the care you’d expect from a real architect.  This is a build that will stand as the benchmark for quality and refinement.  Three years from now, that benchmark will be even higher.

This week there were two big contenders for best terraforming.  They were similar in size, style, and creativity, but it was the little things that set one apart and above.  The best terraforming of the week was The Origin Lands: Zorilak of Dasngir, created by jannekloeffler.  Yes, the same jannekloeffler that provided the renders for last week’s winner.

undefined

The Origin Lands is a massive and diverse terrain, ranging from the tropical, to the temperate, to the mountainous.  It’s an 8K map, which basically means there’s a lot to see.  It’s split into 3 regions (all of which have names reminiscent of pharmaceutical products for some odd reason).  Delevarin is a temperate landscape with snow sprinkled mountain ranges, Geldarin is more tropical, and Nauxilion is a swamp-like series of islands with brightly colored trees and foliage.

undefined

The things that separate this terraforming from its contenders are few, but they are absolute.  The first is the seamless transition between the different terrains.  The gradation between the mountain ranges, the swamps, the lush forests, and the temperate plains is so slight and so perfect that it becomes hyperrealistic.  I wouldn’t be surprised to come across something like this in the real world.

undefined

As if the beauty of the landscape wasn’t enough, it’s accompanied by some absolutely fantastic lore.  Feel free to read it on the PMC page; it’s very engaging.  Couple that with the fact that the entire island is survival ready (full of ores and all the materials necessary to play in survival mode), with caves galore, you have an impressive and interactive map for the ages.

The past two reviews, I’ve shown you pure organic work.  This week, there were a lot of hybrids (projects that incorporate structures, terraforming, and organic work).  These ranged from dolphins with boats on their backs, a civilization built atop a giant tortoise, and one of the best tree packs I’ve ever seen.  But, ultimately, there was one that really caught my eye.  The best organic work of the week is Draosia, created by HytherdelPMC.

undefined

I’m going to flat-out say it.  I don’t know what this is.  All I can say is that it’s one of the most frighteningly awesome things I’ve ever seen.  I mean, what’s more awesome than a pile of gory flesh, bones, tentacles, and other crazy abstract things?  I could try to pick this apart, and analyze every detail, but I feel that would be an insurmountable task.  This is too insane for analysis.  It’s better to just look and wonder.

undefined

To further prove my earlier point, that time is required to create true art, this project has been in progress since last November.  What kinds of manic thoughts went through HytherdelPMC’s head between now and then is a mystery.  All we have are the results, and the results are quite manic indeed.  But as if this deranged sculpture wasn’t enough, there’s actually more to see in this map.

undefined

Standing alongside the nightmare totem, is a vast palace of despair and horror.  And it’s within the walls of this palace that we find even more organic work.  Demons lunging out of lava pools, horrifying gothic windows, and hyperrealistic statues galore.  What more could one ask for?

undefined

I know it seems like I’m a sucker for scary things, as that’s all I’ve ever reviewed in the organic category, but can you blame me?  Dolphins and tortoises have got nothing on this.  The level of detail, and the amount of creativity that went into this is mind-blowing.  PMC is sometimes a scary place, but that’s usually when it’s at its best.

Thanks for checking out this blog!  If you liked it, please consider tossing me a diamond, and don't forget to toss the creators of these projects a few diamonds as well!

If you want your project featured on this series, keep in mind that I select projects purely based on their quality.  You can't bribe your way into this.  Having said that, there are 3 prerequisites that a project must meet before I consider it for this review:
1 - Project must be posted within the week.  Updates don't count.
2 - Project must be complete, or complete enough to be considered 'whole'.
3 - User must be at least level 10.

You mean 'Week of April 26'?  I always upload these weekly reviews on Sunday.  The weeks span from every Sunday to every Saturday.  Gotta wait till the end of the week to be sure I don't miss any projects (the really good ones tend to be uploaded on the weekends, so Saturday is very important).  ;)

It amazes me how many stunning projects are uploaded to PMC every week.

by the way, have you ever considered adding a a skin section to your "Week in Review" series?

Nope.  I don't regularly look at the skin section.  Looking at every project takes a lot of time.  It's not that I dislike skins, it's just that there aren't enough hours in the day.

I'm definitely going to do it some day in the future.  I'm thinking about expanding to land structures, water structures, air structures, terraforming, organic work, redstone, and adventure/parkour maps.  We'll see.  :)

I think making such a block is a really cool idea, do you think you could add more subjects to it?

You know, I was thinking about doing that and having 6 categories instead of 3.  My only problem with the 6-review model is that it would require a lot more work on my part, and it would also require me to play every single parkour/adventure map in a week's time.

Eventually, I'll definitely expand to 6 reviews, but for right now I'm sticking with 3 simply because I've got a lot more projects on my plate currently.  ;)
