Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

Zach Ripka @zachrip_

To begin this article, I'd like you to find your browser version, if it says "up to date" anywhere around the version number, congrats, you're the user I love, you make developing websites so much easier on developers, and you enjoy the new benefits of todays standards, not last years. If your browser is not up to date, I'd like you to take the few minutes it takes to update it, and then continue reading this article and I'll explain why I had you update it.

So to help explain why you should update your browser, I'm going to try to put you, the reader into my perspective, as a developer. So from my point of view, I see the huge, vast Internet, it's magnificent, so much is to be had. I see a lot of users who are eager to try out websites, so I make one. I test my website on an updated browser, it works perfectly, great right? Well let's go test it on something like Internet Explorer 6, which still holds 6.3% of the browser market(IE6Countdown, http://www.ie6countdown.com/). It looks terrible almost nothing is in the right place, half of the inputs don't work, and you spend hours developing the website for an outdated browser that nobody should be using in the first place, after all, the latest version is Internet Explorer 10! Websites could be so much more intuitive if our users just updated their browsers more often, the old browsers are holding us back as a whole! Countless hours have been spent redeveloping websites to work for old browsers, when it could be spent making the original website better.

Now that I've covered the point-of-view of the developer, let me cover you as a user. So it's a pain in the butt to update, right? Wrong, today there are plenty of ways to keep software up to date, automatically. Even if there isn't, it only takes a few minutes MAX to update your browser. So you don't like change? Well change is good, so what if you're not used to it? Changes to your browser are almost always good changes, and if you don't like them, just put in a comment to the developers, maybe they'll see your comment and revert the changes, and implement them a different way, the developers are here to help you, not harm. I personally use the beta version of Google Chrome, and I highly suggest it. I get access to tons of new things that other browsers and older versions of chrome don't get to use. Not to mention there are new things like "Extensions" or "Addons" that you can use in your browser to help improve workflow, more easily engage in social media, and automate things.

General stats and facts:

"As of April 2013, according to StatCounter, Google Chrome has a 39% worldwide usage share of web browsers making it the most widely used web browser in the world." (Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome)

This Wikipedia page has a large number of stats comparing browsers. As you can see, Google Chrome outperforms most others, and supports a lot of things that other browsers do not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers

HTML5 is here, and if you don't have an updated browser, you'll be left in the dust, developers are starting to stop supporting old browsers as it is a waste of time and money, it's also extremely frustrating.

If I haven't convinced you to update by now, you're just being inconsiderate, you wouldn't keep an old, slow car from the 40's, when you could have the new blazing fast Ferrari, would you? So please update, you're holding us all back.
