Item Descriptions

The Easy Item Descriptions datapack allows you to add additional descriptions and information onto your tools and armor through the crafting table.

How to use:
  • Write your description: Open a book and quill and write whatever text you want on the item. Each page represents a new line of text -- attempting to create a new line in a single page will be misinterpreted as a special character. Using the character § allows for creating colored and formatted text. Read more about formatting codes here.
  • Craft the item: In the crafting table, put in the book and quill (not signed), the tool you want to give the description to, and a nametag all in a line. It doesn't matter which direction this line goes as long as the tool is in the center. Click the recipe book to receive your item with a new description. If an item already has a description, it will be replaced with the new one.

Extra info:
  • This pack is designed to be highly compatible with other packs, meaning it works with most custom tools and weapons, and even includes code to prevent other datapacks' descriptions from being removed
  • Items that are given a description retain all nbt data. This means that your enchantments, durability, name, and any other special data will all remain the same when you give them a description, much like how the smithing table operates.
  • This pack is multiplayer friendly, so feel free to use it on servers
  • To uninstall, type /function item_desc:uninstall
  • This pack uses the NBT Crafting API. For more info, check it out here: https://github.com/BigPapi13/NBT-Crafting-API
A lot of the tricks being used to make this work are brand new and highly experimental, so if you find any bugs please let me know!

Just tried this pack in 1.18, and it no longer works. Any way you could update it, and maybe add JSON formatting support?

This is super cool. I assume you are doing something with the /item command to keep the data. Honestly unsure how exactly this would work............ and of course it is super underappreciated on PMC.

Thanks! It actually works by keeping really close track of the inventory to predict which items are in the crafting table. So if an item is missing when the recipe is crafted and it hasn’t been dropped or anything like that, it’s assumed to be in the crafting table. There’s more info on how it works and how you can use it yourself in the GitHub link at the top of the description

I take it this does NOT work with custom tags of any sort?

I’m not 100% sure what you mean by custom tags. If you mean custom tags on the item that’s being given the enchantment, they are actually saved when you craft the item

He means Custom Tags, NBT that isn't used by any in-game data, but are instead added by the user to mark an item as special... such as custom_item:1b.
