I've gotten lost plenty of times where I've settled on various worlds. Sometimes it takes a couple of hours. Once or twice a few days.
Last month I wandered into an unexplored cavern underground. I could have taken the cheap way out after getting lost but I didn't. I was set up with useful supplies by chance, including a sma saplings and bamboo.
Two weeks of normal gamely it took to find my way out. It was fun. I was creating cobblestone roads so I wouldn't get lost from where I had made a shelter. So somewhere in my realm still is that place with bamboo and two trees growing underground in vast open areas down below.
It was just a cool gaming experience. Found material I didn't have prior to getting lost so I'll be returning for what I want to mine out of there next time.

Lazy.
once, i was on your avarage pillager potrol (with 2 other squad members) when we realized we were lost (thats what i get for letting Ein use the map), anyway it took about 2 weeks for us to get back to the outpost, and the illager caption was rather angry (it wasnt all bad, as we found some villages we didnt know existed... we raided them).
I think my longest search for home that I actually stuck to was several hours over a couple real-life days.
I've also had at least two instances where I got lost enough that I disgust-quit, didn't play for a few days until I'd mostly forgotten what all I lost when I couldn't find my base, and then just started over at the next place I liked most that I found. x) So, permanently, I guess

My entire playthrough once. Got lost, tried finding my way back, got even more lost, said screw it and just became a wandering nomad. It was fun :)
