Hey everyone, I am coolkevin867 for all of you who don't know me. I have recently gotten into PC Gaming (perfect timing for the new console hype). I'm looking to build my own gaming desktop, but I really don't know how. I want to keep it under $1000 dollars at maximum, preferably under $800. It needs to be the best it can be. I would like to use an i7 Intel Core Processor, but everything else is still being decided. So if you have any tips as to what parts I should get (remember must be good, but cheap) , tutorials, etc. Really anything you can offer would be awesome!
Thanks, coolkevin867

Hello everyone, I realize I said that my previous question would be the last, but I have yet another. I recently purchased my first computer part, the Graphics Card! I got a Gigabyte Gefore GTX 770 Windforce x3 OC Edition. I will be getting the rest of the parts within a week or two. My only issue is with the case, I am really uncertain as to what to buy. I'd like it to be full tower, although mid tower is fine, but my budget is around $120. It needs to be large enough to store a 10.5 GPU and have USB 3.0. I hope you guys can help, as you have in the past

I'd also like to ask if anyone thinks that a portion of the monitor is more important than another, such as having 144ghz or 2560x1440 resolution. If anyone would like to make the argument for and LCD monitor, please do so, although I am already kind of set on LED.

An IPS panel will give you better color reproduction, better viewing angles, etc. An IPS LED panel will be extremely thin too. The resolution doesn't quite matter, unless your monitor is going to be huge. Higher resolution=Lower FPS.

I was looking at IPS monitors, but I read many reviews that said they were not as good for gaming because of input lag and lower refresh rates. That is why I was leaning towards an LED, but I could go either way depending on the specific monitor.

Lower refresh rates meaning that they're only usually 60Hz. They're great for gaming and I know many people that wish they had an IPS display.
LED is just the backlight technology. You could have a TN panel with an LED backlight, or you could have a TN panel without the LED backlight.

Feel free to add me on Skype if you'd like to talk a bit more: appleproductfreak (I made it a long time ago. Haha)

I was looking through IPS displays and I couldn't find a good one that was more than 23 inches. I would really prefer a 27 inch monitor and that could be a deal breaker, although I am still looking into it. Thanks for the suggestion. I also had one last question about graphics cards once again. I was wondering if you, or anyone else, would suggest two GTX 660 SLI over a single GTX 770. They are around the same price, but I don't know if one is better or if it isn't worth the hassle of getting it set up. Thanks in advance and I don't think I will need your skype as this should be my last question

Hello everyone once again! I would like to inform all of you that I am almost half way to the money it will need to purchase this computer and should be gaining more due to summer jobs. I have another question for anyone willing to answer. I am currently researched monitors and was wondering which one would be best. I would really prefer to not spend more than $250 ($300 at maximum) on a monitor. I will only buy one for now, but possibly at a second in the future. I have been looking at the Asus VE278Q as and the ASUS VG248QE as options. I may want to mention I would prefer a 27-inch, but if by doing so I lose too much quality, 24-inch is fine. Thanks for your help in advance!

The 4170 is outdated and you could get a 6300 cheaper. I'd say bump it up to the 8320/8350 if you're going AMD. With this budget you should include a 990fx motherboard. You don't need 1866mhz RAM, just get whatever 2x4gb ram is cheapest. The 1 tb Barracuda appears to be cheaper right now. The Corsair PSU is actually cheaper.

@coolkevin Your build is good. I'd say get the 3570k instead of the 3470 because it is a little faster than the 3470. For the GPU I'd say the 770.

Video Card: eVGA nVidia Geforce 660 2GB Superclocked
RAM: 8GB G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1866Mhz
Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital GreenDrive
Case (Please tell me if this isn't compatible with the rest of the parts): NZXT Guardian Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Case 921RB-BL
Case is fine:
Power Supply: ThermalTake TR2 600 W

Your setup was fine, but with these changed I've made, you can save a few bucks.
The AMD cpu is a better solution since you're just going to be gaming, as it has a better value for the performance as compared to the Intel solution.
The RAM was changed to G.SKill as for the same speed and amount, they're roughly $30 cheaper.
I recommend a WD GreenDrive as it has excellent performance at a lower price point that a premium Caviar Black.
The GeForce 660 Superclocked is about 25-30% better than the 7870, and the Superclocked version I recommended is even more powerful, about 40%.
Finally, the ThermalTake TR2 600W power supply offers more power at a lower price point. Corsair makes premium products, which given the fact that your budget was less than $1000, means that you're throwing money away by paying more for less. I hope this helps!

Best store out there, in my opinion.
The tech people know some things, but not really much.
It is fairly cheap, waaay cheaper than like Best Buy.
Making computers is a great way to learn about how computers work, so make sure to have fun!

*When installing, make sure to not shock your parts, static will destroy!

For Performance gaming I would suggest an AMD CPU instead of intel... It's MUCH cheaper but still perform very well. I use a AMD FX-4350 which is a 4.2GHz CPU with 4 cores.... How much? Only $120 on Amazon.... You can't beat deals like that with Intel.

No, intel CPU's architecture is more efficient, less power goes to heat. When you buy a processor it's not all about GHz anymore.

Many games still aren't multithreaded, and performance per core is a lot better on the blue team.

On which settings? Medium? High? What about anti-aliasing? Also, what about the Radeon 7870, how will that do? Thanks for answering all my questions so far

High/ultra on the 770, the 7870 won't match it. Make sure to post a video of your computer when you're done

I will make sure to Are you sure it is compatible with the motherboard and all the rest of the computer? That's my last question.

Yes, it's compatible. I'd get a 850w power supply to be safe though[/quote]

A 770 is way overkill for minecraft, what FPS games will you be playing?

Any and all FPS. Probably mostly Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3, but others will be included.

You'll be able to play crysis 3 with 20+ FPS to spare

What games specifically will you be playing? A 770 will practically run any game you want on high settings with decent fps.

I may also want to add that with my new budget, I want to spend the extra $200 dollars on only the graphics card. I would really like a good graphics card and don't really want to spend the money on anything else. So I am good with the specs I posted above, unless anyone would REALLY like to suggest a spec

Just to let everyone know who helped me out or wants to help me out, I made a decision to push my budget up to around $1000. In this case I would purchase the GTX 770. I have three questions about this:

-Is this compatible with the rest of my build?
Processor: Intel Core i5-3470
Motherboard: MSI B75MA-P45
Graphics Card: XFX Radeon HD 7870
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
Case : NZXT Guardian Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Case 921RB-BL
Power Supply: 500W Corsair CX500

-Is this really worth the extra $200 dollars, or is it not that much better than the Radeon 7870?

-Do you have any other suggestions on video cards? Remember, I can't afford anything priced more than around $400.

Thanks

I am also wondering about monitors, keyboards, mouses, etc. Would you guys recommend wired or wireless mouses. I know that in the past everyone goes for wired in gaming, but they have gotten much better I can't personally see the difference anymore. I was looking at this one for wireless: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CP0BHM/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003CP0BHM&linkCode=as2&tag=bestgamingmotherboards2013-20
And the same mouse on version 7 rather than 9 for wired. I was also looking at this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QUQP76/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005QUQP76&linkCode=as2&tag=bestgamingmousereviews2013-20
For keyboards, this is the first one I found and thought it looked okay: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance ... B005QUQP94
Please give me feedback on at least one if not all of these pieces. Suggestions are very helpful, specifically for monitors. Thanks for all the help so far

Wow, thanks for all the specs, looks like a lot of work. Great prices too, doesn't look like it would be that much higher than the one I mapped out.
mrelectroman3What will you be doing on this PC you are going to build?
I do some basic gaming, Minecraft, tf2, Hitman absolution, Nexuiz, Blacklight Retrobution, Dota2, Planetside 2, Sleeping Dogs, and Warframe.
I can play all of those games on medium/high settings and never drop below 30 FPS.
The original Crysis at ultra is about 32 FPS.

I have a 7770 and an i3 stock speeds (I lied, GPU overclocked +80MHz)

My build will be about 40$ more if you don't have a Microcenter near you. They would still be under 900$ though. Either one should run games as graphic intensive as Crysis 3 at 30+ fps at mid to high settings.

However, Intel is going to be bringing out their 4th gen in less than 3 weeks, so maybe you could stick it out till then?
There won't be much of a difference that you would notice if you decided to get a 4th gen processor.

Is that their new Xeon? I think it might again be too expensive if it would have just come out. I will definitely watch it though to see what I can do.

The Haswell chips will come out soon, and I am pretty sure that the Ivy bridge prices will drop. (Haswell=4th gen, ivy=3rd gen)

If any of you guys have any questions, I could answer them. Just PM me on here, or my forums (click sig)

No, their new Xeon is the Xeon Phi which is aimed at Server stuff.
The 4th gen will be their new generation of consumer processors.

So after watching some tutorials and other videos, I have come up with some components:

Processor: Intel Core i5-3470
Motherboard: MSI B75MA-P45
Video Card: XFX Radeon HD 7870
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
Case (Please tell me if this isn't compatible with the rest of the parts): NZXT Guardian Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Case 921RB-BL
Power Supply: 500W Corsair CX500

Please tell me if anyone knows of any up-gradable parts that have a comparable price that might be a bit better Thank you for all the help so far!
