Is my desktop good enough to withstand a public server?

My desktop is a core i3 - 2120.
It runs at 3.30 ghz.
However it does have an Nvidia Geforce gt8800 graphics card.
It has 4gb of ram but is upgradable and will be increased if the computer ends up being used as a host.

Will this be good enough to host a minecraft Bukkit server that can withstand 20 people or below?

It will only have about 4 plugins, and will not be put under too much stress since the main world will be a void.

Your graphics card makes almost no difference in the behavior of the minecraft server because players are running their own graphics, you are just sending and processing data to them.

if its just your friends it should work fine, but if you are doing it for the public you should really invest in a 24/7 server with more powerful equipment. I bought a server that cheap for about 30 bucks a year from demonvps, and it works very nicely

Yea, they can be so cheap because they own a data center. 20 Players Bukkit I recommend 2 gigabytes to be safe. If you could have 1.5 gigabytes then it would be fine, but you can't with demonvps.

2 gigabytes of what? RAM? I'd be insanely surprised if you mean 2gbps of upload speed.

FOPSystemsNo, I am not sure. I tired to stay general but you're fully right, I was a bias towards the U.S.. I provided he/she should use Fiber-optic than included a link to an American company I am familiar and trust.. I am sorry, I don't know any international internet service providers ("ISPs") that provide fiber-optic... I am sure that he/she may Google Search his/her country followed by "fiber-optic internet". I do agree, I was bias and I shouldn't have been.

Don't worry about it, there's no offensive bias or something. Just remember to check or mention that you're giving U.S. suggestions next time, lol.

2 mb upload is enough for like 24 people... I say about 6 people for half a megabit, 3 to be safe.

2mb can run 6 flawlessly. 24 will result in lag.

Huh, weird, because Can I host a minecraft server even used to say 24 players for 2 mb upload. Probably has to do with 1.8, but I still think it should run 12 players fine.

Your GPU doesn't matter when hosting a server. Your upload speed will be fine for 10 people, but expect some lag. Who is your internet service provider?

I ran a server for 8 people from an Acer Aspire 5732z
Intel Pentilium 4,
2GB ram
with integrated graphics,
with it all on max settings (this was like 1.2.5)
That ran fine i guess?

What do you mean max settings lol?
I managed to do the same exact thing (with pretty much same specs) on minimal settings in 1.7.4. So, derp.

Again, I must agree with the previous comments.. You may wish to invest in using Fiber-optic cables. Verizon FiOS is able to offer 50/50mbs for around 85 dollars per month*. That may be over-killed, but it truly depends on the size of your user-base (100 players vs 20 players makes a big difference), where users are connecting from (U.S. to Australia will want a faster connection that U.S. to U.S.)*, what plugins are you using (Dynmap requires more resources regarding CPU and Networking bandwidth), will you be operating a web-server (BukkitHTTPD uses internet the internet, duh-).. They are tons of variables..

I'd say, upon upgrading your internet connection, you'll be able to run a server with 30 people. The only issue I see is gaining popularly after upgrading your internet.

Datacenters often have fiber optic lines to their core routers, and copper from there on out.

You are not required to have fiber to run a server @home

You will want to not run anything else on your PC and refrain from doing anything that consumes a lot of bandwith ex. Downloading steam games, Netflix etc.

I recommend connecting your PC to your router with an Ethernet cable, not with wireless.

30mbps down and 2mbps up would not do unless you're running a super small server. If you plan to run a home hosted server, get a better internet. 2mbps is not a good upload speed.

http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/ This will probably help you.

Any CPU made in the last 6 or 7 years or so will run a reasonably-sized Minecraft server just fine, and that RAM amount is plenty for 20 people. The GPU doesn't matter, because the server doesn't need to make graphical calculations.

However, as others have said, your upload bandwidth is not nearly enough to host 20 people. But, if you go into the server.properties file and turn the view distance down from 10 to 5, you'll probably be able to fit 10 people on your server without it being too laggy.

Your server sounds similar to mine in terms of specs...it'll run just fine. It may start lagging a TINY bit at 8 players but generally it'll run pretty okay. You're going to need a better upload speed if you want more players, though.

2mb up not that much you can only have 6 players with that setup (with yourself)
just need better connection lets say you had 30 mb upload and 60 download and 3 gb of ram put into the server cuse the operating system uses ram
then you could have 36 players with your self.
