I have a windows 7 laptop with 4gb of ram, AMD Anthlon II P320 Dual-Core Processor 2.10 GHz, 200gb HDD with no side programs installed other than Norton, Java, and the required updates.
It has 45 or so plugins with around 15 slots. The server is running on 2gb of ram, while i am planning to change it back to 1gb since I want to host a second server. But if it fails i am also about to fix my desktop to run back on Windows Xp Business, 500gb HDD and 2gb of ram. "Came by default". I have 3 other computers but they are not network connected with 512mb of ram "Before 1gb became standard". The desktop is about to get reseted to factory like i did the laptop. But would i have to host it from a new location or just end up having to upgrade the parts to newer, more modern standard parts.

You're going to need better hardware if you want to host servers, but your main bottleneck when hosting on your own machine would be the upload/download speed. If you have decently fast internet, you'll need to upgrade your hardware. Better processor, more ram. A small server shouldn't use that much resources though, but you should avoid playing Minecraft while having the server running.
My internet is 1gb broadwith, 60 upload and 40 download. also i don't play minecraft using that computer as I use another one for it since I don't think java will handle it.
