Righto, so I'm working on a texture pack which, despite my inhibitions, is 64x64. I'm using the recommended HD texture pack fix. It was working fine with my 1.9 prerelease, but then I switched back to the 1.8 standard. Upon looking in my inventory I noticed that a number of blocks had been... well, honestly, I don't know what to call it.

They were this'd.
Block of gold, brick slab, brick stairs, and jack-o-lantern also behave the same way. The little portal, fire, and water textures are actually all animated, which is cool, but not exactly what I'm looking for.
Anyone have any idea what the deal is or why?
Thanks in advance.

I did use the patcher, but it turns out that it needed to be re-patched. Thanks for your help.

Interesting update: I just noticed that netherack has been completely replaced with flowing water texture. Sure do wish I could figure out how to do this on purpose.
