I'm trying to work on a skin but my smudge tool seems to have no effect. I've made sure that there are no extra layers and the rate and opacity is up. It simply won't work. Anybody know whats wrong?

And by the way, it's because you're using an indexed image.
Selecting Image > Mode > RGB is the proper way to fix this.

Humor me. Try this...
- Save As: dwarfskin2.png, hit Export when prompted.
- Then hit: File > Revert
See if that works.

Wow, this is annoying. I've set everything just as you said, and yet, it still doesn't smudge. Now I just feel like a noob.

Easy way to be sure it is not a layer issue, just save it as a new .png file, and load that. A fresh PNG won't have any layers at all.

Other things to make sure of:
- Brush set to 1px (Circle (01))
- Scale set to 1.00
- Check Hard edge
- Rate set higher than 0 (50.0 is default)

Are you smudging the wrong layer? Make sure to flatten the image if your trying to smudge the area in-between two layers.
(EDIT) Sorry I didn't read the first post properly. Any screenshots?

Are you trying to use it on a locked layer? That would be the first thing to check...

Nope, everything is set up how it should be, I'm not sure why it won't work. I tested it out on other images and it works fine, but when I load up my skin image it does absolutely nothing.

I have paint.net, but GIMP is definitely better...when it works anyway.
