This is my 7-segment display design. It uses sticky pistons to push blocks through lava, allowing for an extremely visible digit. It is a good choice to use as a display because it can be used in day and night, and doesn't require specialized texture packs to have clearer numbers. The delay of the lava falling after a number change is negligible and there are no fatal design flaws created by using pistons and lava.
