When I was building the lobby for Chunk Wars I knew I needed a way to display information for players.
I wanted to do it on a large scale, using massive words hovering in the sky like signs. And I wanted them to be clear and to draw inspiration from Minecraft.
So I began thinking about how I could build or represent the standard font used in Minecraft. I started out just placing blocks down and moved onto playing around with simple pixelated fonts.
It was then that I remembered watching a video from Etho a few months before, where he opened his episode with an ABC sing song and showed an alphabet he'd designed in Minecraft to fit in a 3 by 3 block space.
And in that moment it struck me! I could build my own font in Minecraft.
It was difficult to begin with. I worked to find a letter size that would fit in the limited space I had in my Chunk Wars lobby. I tried again, kept going, and finally found a basic shape that would work.
6 blocks high and 3 blocks wide for the lower case letters would do it. Then I could make the capitals 1 block wider for extra impact. And it worked.
I added guide lines to help me build each letter to the correct size, and suddenly I was writing words in the sky just like I had imagined.
Many hours later after building, breaking, and tweaking - I finished BlocksType - a font designed completely in Minecraft, using only slabs and stairs.
BlocksType is available in 2 variants;
Strong - for a clean look with sharp corners, or
Soft - for a softer rounded feel, easier on the eye
You can find BlocksType in the Minecraft world download on this page.
And you can see the Play sign in the Chunk Wars lobby image below!
And of course, if you want to see the rest of the lobby and play my Chunk Wars mini-game for Minecraft, then you can check it out here.
