The world morphs and changes around Steve as he watches. Mountains rise from the earth and scrape the sky, lakes are pummeled into the ground like beats of a giant's fist. Forests grow like moss, spreading across the world and populating the sparse ground. The air grows cold, and snow is seen in far off peaks. Next to him, the ground dries and becomes barren. Cacti sprout, and a massive canyon is torn through the desert. Casting a glance over his shoulder, Steve sees a flaming meteor fly down from the sky and disappear over the horizon, most likely to slam into the ocean somewhere. He squints and can just barely make out glaciers flowing across another landmass across the sea. A roar sounds, and he turns his head towards it. A red haze is seen, and acrid smoke is belched forth from an unholy volcano that has risen. Screams and cries sound from where the smoke comes, the sound of lost souls and terrible anger. An awful, mind-rending noise suddenly occupies his full attention, and he is brought to one knee. His vision flashing, piercingly sharp and then agonizingly blurry, he sees spires of black and emotionless purple eyes. Knowing the void awaits him, he cries out - and the pain stops. Standing, hesitantly, he looks around once more. It is at that moment that a voice speaks to him in his mind.
"This is the world. The world made for you. The world where you will create your dreams, realize your aspirations."
Steve is dumbstruck by now, bewilderment the clearest emotion to lay upon his brow. Yet the voice was not done, and continues.
"But this world was not made for you alone. You are one of many, insignificant among the throng. You will know pain. You will know discontent. You very well may die. Die alone, alone save for the monsters, the others, the feeling of loss."
"Or you may prosper. You may live like a king, surrounded by great allies and fields of wheat. Every comfort is accounted for, and you in turn are a nightmare for those who wish to take that away."
"Live or die. Stand or fall. Prosper or waste away. Live in fear or oust the fear from the world."
"Now!"
"Now is the time to choose."
"Die and be free of pain..."
"Or live and fight the source!"
"Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!"
Steve, motionless, is suddenly aware of countless others around him. They seem to be in a similar predicament, unsure of what to do. Were these the others the voice spoke of? Should he fight them? Should he run? His frantic thoughts are cut off once more.
"Every story must have an ending... But this is just the beginning. The opening chapter of a newly forged legend, a freshly written poem, the first line of a tale of epic proportions."
"This... This is your world now."
"Go. Shape your stories. No longer can you be guided through strife. No more can you be sheltered."
"This is it."
"The end of a story..."
"...and the birth of a world."
"Your legend... Begins NOW!"
With a crack like thunder, Steve is suddenly free from his unknown trance, and the others around him stumble as well. Light from the sun dazzles him, and the landscape around him seems so free. Yet he knows it shall not be so for long. He knows that others will try to defile it, defile what is rightfully his. Steeling his will and hardening his heart, sharpening his mind and preparing his body, Steve looks at the others around him. No, not others. Allies... and enemies.
Turning away from them all, he takes a single step...
...and rushes headlong towards the light.

TL;DR: This is the map for a server run by an old friend that I made. The server is titled Carbon Infinite, hence the name of the map. Detailed terrain has been entirely hand-made with WorldPainter, no generation involved. Massive continents have structures and features seen never before in Minecraft, everything from desert canyons to craters from a long-forgotten shower of meteors. I spent a grand total of 108 hours on this project, and the results are, quite frankly, epic. I highly encourage you all to see the map for yourself, in game. The pictures don't do it justice.
You may recognize some of the pictures from my Minedeas contest entry. The map I used for my entry was this map - I figured I already had epic terrain, why not use it?
