Descent Into the Devil's Spire is a short Minecraft adventure map for 1-4 players, brimming with action-packed encounters, puzzles and valuable treasure.
Introduction
Seeking adventure, you find yourself lost on a forgotten trail. Legends speak of a lost temple filled with magical treasures beyond these woods. But Ten Trials of Courage await those who venture inside, and none have passed to tell the tale of these terrible tests.
The location of the entrance remains a mystery to most. Perhaps the mushroom hermit can tell you more.
Installation
Extract the Devil's Spire Descent v1.1 folder to your .minecraft/saves directory. Do NOT create a new folder when extracting; the World folder is already contained in the setup archive.
Saving a backup copy is recommended because deaths will happen until you learn the levels. If your stuff is irretrievable upon death and backup items are unavailable, you may need to restart.
Devil's Spire Descent v1.1 is current with Minecraft version 1.1. No mods are required to play. A modified version may be forthcoming in the future, but the intention is to maintain a vanilla MC-compatible version as the official edition.
Gameplay Rules
There really aren't many. Don't break walls, doors, or mechanisms, but you may break other suspicious blocks in certain levels. Play on any difficulty except Peaceful (Normal recommended). Take and use whatever you find. Unlock the exits to each level and return alive with the treasure! Up to 3 other friends can join you!
There are optional "reset points" every 2 levels where you can clear all the currently spawned monsters before entering the next level, if things get too crowded for you. At the exit to every 2nd level, you may switch to Peaceful, unpause, then switch back to Normal or whatever difficulty you were using, before descending the stairs to the next level. If you choose not to use the reset points, you will encounter greater battles. More monsters = more experience and greater difficultly.
Use the break between each level to prepare for the next, remember to eat and heal up!
About this Map
This is a standalone edition of the Devil's Spire challenge, originally designed as a feature in the upcoming Criswelvania release -- a tower to grind in for experience and loot. Inspired by other classic tower grinds such as the arena challenge in LoZ: Windwaker, HxH's Trick Tower, and various other progressing arenas.
However, playtesting has revealed that this challenge is fun on its own as a quick single-session map which can feasibly be beaten by an experienced player in about an hour. And so, I have released it separately for your enjoyment, with a new spawn point, and everything outside the Devil's Spire area removed.
This map feature will still be included in the next version of Criswelvania, don't worry! You can practice on this map to prepare for the many ways you will face your doom.
This can be a difficult, somewhat ah.. hostile map, and some of the puzzles may be tricky to figure out. Every level has a different assortment of foes and a lock mechanism you must figure out in order to proceed deeper into the tower. None of them are Jigsaw-hard though, and hints are there if you look.
Learn how to handle each situation, and always enter a level prepared. The puzzles range from easy to moderate difficulty. The combat can be very difficult if you charge into crowded rooms and do not utilize all of the weapon options. Certain items are extremely effective against different foes.
I predict most will not beat this challenge on the first try, especially without using the reset points. Even I cannot beat it solo 100% of the time (Level 10 is epic). Think of it like any challenging game, if you lose, retry and get a little further. If you get stuck, feel free to ask for further clues.
Helpful Hints
Feedback greatly appreciated!

Helpful Hints
- Use the beds to set a respawn point.
- Use the doorways to thin out crowded rooms before entering.
- Clear out all monsters and disable spawners before solving a new lock.
- Make use of the treasures you find. Spades tend to be enchanted with Smite, and Axes with Bane of Arthropods. There are some other combat possibilities too if you use items creatively.
- If you're feeling overwhelmed by mobs, be sure to use the reset points.
- Building blockades or bridges is permitted.
