The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the primary fighter aircraft of the United States Navy from its introduction in 1974 until its retirement in 2006. Developed to replace the F-4 Phantom II after the F-111B program failed to produce a viable carrier based variable geometry fighter. The Tomcat saw multiple upgrades and improvements over its service life that expanded its mission scope and ensured it remained a deadly threat in air to air engagements.
