The Third Cod War began in November 1975 and the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) returns to enforce the new 200 nautical mile exclusion zone and to conduct net cutting operations against any British fishing trawlers operating within the zone. The British government responded by sending the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Fisheries to protect the trawlers and deal with the ICG.

For the duration of the conflict, the ICG had Six Vessels and Two Aircraft Operational under the direction of Captain Petur Sigurðsson, in turn the whole service is under the Ministry of Justice of the Icelandic Government. The Third Cod War proved to be the most intense as it involved 55 incidents of ramming and collision. In the end, the two governments made an agreement and the conflict ended in June 1976.

- Real World Characteristics: 920 tons, 17 knots, 22 crewmembers, 1x 57mm Cannon and 1x 47mm Cannon

The oldest ship in the fleet. She had served in all three conflicts of the Cod Wars. In December 1975, under the command of Commander Helgi Hallvarðsson, she collided with the tugboat Lloydsman and supply vessel Star Aquarius which damaged her stern and helicopter deck. A BBC news crew spent some time with the ship and witnessed its collision with the frigate H.M.S. Leander. She was decommissioned in 1983 and sold in 1985 to the Association of Search and Rescue. In 2012, the ship was scrapped.

Commissioned in January 1960, the ship served in all three conflicts of the Cod Wars. She had a long and active career until decommissioned in 2006 and was put in display at the Reykjavik Maritime Museum. However, she was well maintained, and her engines are still working as of 2022.

<>

Guardship Ægir (1968 to 2020 / 2022)
- 70 blocks long, 13 blocks wide
- Real World Characteristics: 1,500 tons full, 20 knots, 22 crewmembers, 1x 57mm Cannon

Lead ship of the Ægir class. She entered service in 1968 and served as flagship during the Second Cod War. Two years later, the Third Cod War began, and she was back on net cutting operations. The last action of the conflict saw the ship collide with H.M.S. Tartar, within a week later, the Cod Wars ended. She continued serving with the coast guard until she was out of service in 2020 and was eventually decommissioned in August 2022.

<>

Guardship Árvakur (1969 to 1981)
- 40 blocks long, 11 blocks wide
- Real World Characteristics: 716 tons, 12 knots, 12 crewmembers, no armaments

A Lighthouse Tender built in Holland for Iceland’s department of lighthouses. She was transferred to the Coast Guard in 1969 and participated in the Second and Third Cod Wars. She was returned to lighthouse services in 1981.

<>

Guardship Týr (1975 to 2021 / 2022)
- 70 blocks long, 13 blocks wide
- Real World Characteristics: 1,500 tons full, 20 knots, 22 crewmembers, 1x 57mm Cannon

Second and last ship of the Ægir class. She was the newest ship in the fleet and served as flagship during the Third Cod War. She was skippered by Commander Guðmundur Kjærnested. She was involved in numerous collisions including the incident on 6th May 1976 where she was rammed by H.M.S. Falmouth and nearly capsized. She continued serving with the coast guard until she was out of service in November 2021 and was eventually decommissioned in August 2022.

<>

Guardship Baldur (1975 to 1977)
- 60 blocks long, 11 blocks wide
- Real World Characteristics: 740 tons, 15 knots, 20 crewmembers, 1x 47mm or 57mm Cannon

A Stern Trawler built in Poland. In early 1975 she was bought by the Icelandic Government for use as a research vessel. Then in December 1975, she was transferred to the Coast Guard and fitted for use in the Third Cod War. During the conflict, she was involved in collisions with Royal Navy Frigates Diomede, Yarmouth, Galatea, Mermaid, and Eastbourne. During the conflict, she was skippered by Commander Höskuldur Skarphéðinsson. In 1977, she was transferred to the Ministry of Fisheries and later sold to fishing companies. In 2020, the ship was scrapped.

TF SYR (Sýr)
- Fokker F27 Maritime Patrol Aircraft
- 25 blocks long, 29 blocks wide (wingspan), 10 blocks high

Entered service in 1972. Used primarily for Aerial Search and Maritime Surveillance. The aircraft was used extensively during the Second and Third Cod Wars. It was sold in December 1980.

<>

TF GRO (Gróa)
- Hughes 500C Helicopter
- 10 blocks long, 9 blocks rotor diameter

Entered service on 7th April 1976. The aircraft was fitted with floats and is used to support coast guard ships by providing light transport duties. In November 1980, the aircraft crashed, it was later repaired but withdrawn from service and replaced by a Hughes 500D Helicopter with the same registration.

Ships & Aircraft not included in the Project

Guardship Albert (1957 to 1978)
- Real World Displacement: 188 tons

A small patrol and rescue craft jointly owned by the Coast Guard and the National Life-saving Association of Iceland. She participated in the First Cod War. Unknown usage during the Second and Third Cod Wars. She was later decommissioned and sold in 1978.

<>

TF HUG (Huginn) and TF MUN (Muninn)
- Bell 47G Helicopters

Both entered service in 1973 during the Second Cod War. They experienced frequent breakdowns and performed poorly when landing on coast guard ships at sea, so they were probably not used during the Third Cod War. They were eventually withdrawn from service by 1978 and sold in 1980.

Guardship "Ver”

Several sources on the internet (including Wikipedia) claimed that another trawler was used by the coast guard during the Third Cod War. The existence of this ship is doubtful and upon checking the photo scan of the newspaper article where the claim comes from, the ship was infact the trawler Baldur (based on its appearance and the article mentioned the ship was built in Poland) and was probably mistaken for another ship.
