Life on Mars? Is that even possible? You bet it is and there has already been humans on the surface. They have planned and researched everything that might possibly be needed to survive. They were there, they had fun and they came home.

But what did they leave behind? An empty base ready for you to survive in! Welcome to my submission. It is inspired by the Mars Foundation - Hillside Settlement design. When I first saw this contest I knew that I had to submit an entry. Afterall, my skin is a space suite. :D

For my design, I decided to make a map you would actually be able to live in. I did a lot of research and found out that it is very harmful to be under the sun's rays on the surface of Mars without protection. The radiation alone can kill you if you are not careful. This means going out during the night cycle of Mars is probably more safe. Watch out for the dust storms though!

Furthermore, surviving on Mars would be difficult without food and oxygen. This base provides tons of greenhouse buildings and plantlife to help convert the CO2 expelled by occupants and food for eating. Be aware, low pressure grow rooms are very hard to grow crops in. Keep your plants watered!

Enough Science for today, on with the build!

I bring you my Mars Hillside Settlement. This settlement can support 32 people sleeping on a 12 hour rotation or 16 people on a traditional day/night sleep schedule. Most of the doors are automatic sliding doors to keep air locks secure and maintain a controlled environment. The base has the follwing features that any Mars explorer would enjoy.

8 seperate living quarters.
     - Sleeps two in coffin style bunk beds.
     - Has shared shower and head.
     - Plenty of storage space for personal effects.

     - 2 arificial light
     - 2 sunlight
4 Tree Farms
EVA Bay
Rover Bay - 2 Rovers
2 Farming Equipment Rooms
Excersise Room - 2 Floors
Dining Hall
Large Kitchen
Communications Room
2 Labs
     - Main Lab for chemical testing
     - Laser Lab for mineral testing
Infirmary
     - Observation deck over Infirmary and Laser Lab

I used basic vanilla Minecraft 1.8 and MCEdit to construct this. MCEdit mainly for copying over my build from my Test world. Nothing was auto generated or populated. The only specialty block in this build was my Minecraft skull. Which happens to be a space suit helmet. Cheers!

This build is ready to go. You could deconstruct part of it or empty the good stuff and create an interesting challenge map. Close off areas and make them available as you progress through challenges. I only wish the contest map was bigger! If you are interested in making a mod pack and developing a Mars theme, with a nod to Crash Landing, HQM pack I'd love to help. I have a much larger base already constructed and furnished. I had to shrink what I had completed to fit it into the contest map.
