Hi,
this is the SS Emanuil Vaskidovich, named after the Bulgarian scholar and teacher of the same name (1795-1875), and also the person responsible for founding the first Greco-Bulgarian school in Svishtov, on the Bulgarian side of the Danube (1815)
The ship had a long and distinguished story under two ownerships.She was designed in 1911-1914 with German help, and closely resembled the last two Imperator-class liners. Slowly built during wartime, she wasn't ever listed as an existing ship, and thus avoided being taken away as reparations. Finally completed in 1925, she was the flagship of the Bulgarian Line until the initiation of World War 2, the largest and fastest ocean liner built in Bulgaria. She was 292.5m long (about 1.1m longer than her near-sister RMS Majestic), but was quite a lot lighter and capable of maintaining 25 knots in good weather.
1936 marked her first major refit. As three of her running mates were removed from service, she remained the only ship able to somewhat compete with the newly-finished RMS Queen Mary and SS Normandie. The engines recieved modifications, giving her ability to break 27 knots. The outdated interiors were modernised, and third class was removed. Cosmetically, the hull was painted entirely black (and the flag stripes raised), and parts of the superstructure were plated with wood.
During WW2 she remained entirely out of service, but the narrowly avoided handover after WW1 simply happened later. After WW2, she was taken by the Dutch Koninklijke Nederlandse Lijn (KNL), as reparations, repainted and renamed SS Statendam while still in Bulgaria, and handed over in 1946. Scrapped years later in the 1960s.
