Hello! After 3 years of doing nothing, I am back in business.
and in that spirit, I present to you the SS Tsar Boris III, named after the last ruler whom the Bulgarian truly beloved – Boris III of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
This was a plan by the Bulgarian Line to both beat the competition entirely and promote Bulgaria to the rest of the world by creating the largest and fastest transatlantic liner to ever exist. At 365m length and planned speed of 40 knots, it was to be the pinnacle of the BL’s fleet and a running mate to the much smaller and slower, but not any less grand Vasil Levski (II). Its keel was laid in 1939, but the start of World War II never allowed construction to advance further than that and so it was never launched and obviously did not sail at its planned date of maiden voyage in mid-1943. The gantry with the rusting and dusting keel in it was bombed by the USAAF in 1944, and after the communist coup and Bulgaria’s switching of sides in World War II, the keel was cut up for scrap, so this remains a very big what-if; what if it was completed and everything went as planned? This is what it was supposed to look like.
Of course, this lore is entirely fictional and such a ship, especially from a country like Bulgaria, could never have existed. It is most similar to the never-built Nazi liner SS Viktoria (1937), which was the basis for my design, but greatly enlarged and with a second funnel.
Tonnage: More than 95,000 GRT (expected)
Length: 365m / 1197,5ft (overall)
Beam: 40,5m / 132,8ft
Height: 63,3m / 207,6ft (keel to top of the funnels) (planned)
Draught: 13,3m / 43,6ft (planned)
Installed power: 44x Yarrow boilers feeding 6x ‘’large’’ steam turbines for about 334,000 horsepower (planned)
Propulsion: Six four-bladed propellers, three per side, with the two inner-most ones smaller in diameter (planned, never installed)
Speed: 40 knots (planned), ~30 knots (more likely)(never tested)
Capacity: 5400 passengers (1700 first class, 3700 second class) and 1200 crew for a total of 6600 people
Decks: 12
