Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1724 as one of the numerous garden pavilions for the Earl of Carlisle at Castle Howard in Yorkshire. Used by the earl for reading and refreshment, there is a lower cellar used by servants to prepare food for guests
It continues the long tradition set down first by Palladio at the Villa Rotunda of a centrally planned domed structure with a portico on each facade. The central mass of four winds is a regular cube set beneath a cornice. The facades each host elegant Ionic Porticos and the entire structure is set upon a heavily rusticated base.
It belongs to the somewhat loose stylistic term of the ‘English Baroque’ along with Castle Howard itself, and its other pavilions designed by Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh.
I hope you enjoy this ‘mini’ project of one of our favorite buildings, and that it inspires you to look more into architecture! There will be more to come from us in the coming weeks so stay tuned for more architecture!
