The Beauty of Prewar Manila | The Old Legislative Building
A Minecraft Replica


The old Legislative Building is situated alongside Padre Burgos Drive and Taft Avenue in Manila. Its architectural style is neoclassical and ornate with different embellishments. It was planned by Architect Ralph Harrington Doane and his Filipino assistant, Antonio Toledo. The cost to construct it was ₱4,000,000. Initially, it was meant to hold the National Library, following Architect Daniel Burnham's Manila Plan. Building work began in 1918, but due to financial difficulties, it caused delays until its inauguration on July 16, 1926. The building houses the National Library on the ground floor, while the second, third, and fourth floors were home to the senate and houses of representatives of the Philippine government during the American and Commonwealth periods. This form of the building existed from 1926 until it was damaged in 1945 during the Battle of Manila due to heavy bombings. After the war, the building was rebuilt with fewer ornaments and later transformed into what we know as the National Museum of Fine Arts (Nostalgia Filipinas, 2012).
