After viewing some of the awesome structures and other projects on this site, a few of my friends and I decided that the one ship that we had to build was the Defiant!
After talking it over we decided that since the Defiant was a small ship (only 4 decks in total) and around 30M tall, 120M wide and 180ish long that we could build a 1:1 (or pretty close) scale. To set off on the task we used Patrick Min's Binvox program to convert a 3D model I had into a blueprint to of what to build, and set about our task. Now after many months, days, and hours of work we have transfered the empty hull from our dry dock server and into our main world, where we have begun to adding exterior details and have started working on the interior of the ship.
Realizing this project was reaching a turning point we decided to open the server to the public for general comments and thoughts. We have imported the USS Enterprise NCC-1701A (http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/uss-enterprise-ncc1701a-version-12/) and the USS Reliant (by the same guys I think), and the USS Music (http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/uss-music/) as a source of ideas, and I must say that these projects are AMAZING! If mine is only a quater as good I'll be happy.
So, please feel free to stop by and take a peek. We have runecraft installed and there is a teleport rune by the spawn point. In case some of you have never used the plugin before, simply walk up to the rune (looks line a # sign on the ground) and right click in the center. Once you've looked around please feel free to drop me PM with your thoughts and suggestions. Once the project is completed the schematicworld will be made available to all.
May 23rd: Would like to thank ninjakiller for the ideas and the new design of the turbolift system! Also, would like to introduce, Ninjamonkey52, who has recently asked to join the server and help out! Posted a new picture today. Got most of deck 1 and 3 laid down and ready for interrior walls. Also was able to create the first pass at the bridge so please feel free to come on and take a peek and say "Hi!'. You can also shoot me a PM message if you have any ideas on how to improve it.
May 27th: I would like to thank Atrocities for passing on the deck by deck schematics of the defiant. This has made our 1:1 scale model truely possible! Of course some shapes and room sizes don't transfer very well to minecraft but we're hard at work making sure everything is as true to these schematics as possible. Also wanted to note that we are still running a 1.5 beta server. Reports of massive bugs and issues has held up upgrade, but the server is still up with this version if you want to stop by. All of deck one is completed, and half of deck two, and some of deck 3. Stop by and check out main engineering, sick bay, the mess hall, and transporter room two (all on deck 2)!
June 7th, 2011: Howdy all! Just back from vacation and ready to start back up. The server has been updated to 1.6.6!! WAAA HOO! So now everyone who tried to access the server after the latest release can try again to view the defiant. Deck 2 is almost done. We've been hard at work designing how the thurster bay fuel pods should look, as well as the upper port side phaser cannon pre-fire chamber, brige, and a few others. We've expanded the footprint of the shuttle bay a bit and are about to start putting in a fighter in launch position. Want to thank everyone for the kind messages and support. Finally, looks like someone doesn't like the project, which is fine, but things can only improve when feedback is given. So, if you give the project a thumbs down at least have the respect to shoot me a PM (which I will keep private) and let me know your thoughts. At the end of the day this is for everyone so the more feedback we get from the community the better ship we build! Talk to you all soon with an update in a few days with some more screen shots!
