 ✠ Hello everyone, ✠

After some years of Minecraft inactivity, I am very proud to finally share with you my last build: yet again, the Ideal XIII century Gothic Cathedral as envisioned by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in his “Dictionnaire raisonné de l’architecture française du XIe au XVIe siècle”.

Indeed, this is not my first attempt to build this outstanding monument as my first post on PlanetMinecraft 8 years ago was already this Cathedral.

Although, I was not exactly satisfied of how it turned out, especially the interior... And so, after many years of prototyping, intense planning and using new building techniques that were not possible back in the days, I remade the very same Cathedral but MUCH bigger and way more interesting.

  • Here is an interactive 3D Sketchfab view of the building if you want to see a quick overview without downloading the map -> https://skfb.ly/oHtYO

The map has been built for Minecraft 1.19.X in Creative mode with the help of plugins like WorldEdit, the original diagram I used by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc is still the same as before,:

My reproduction is 295m High, 325m Long and 153m Wide, so this is approximatively equivalent to a 2:1 scale.
The upgrade in scale allowed me to use accurate historical architectural features that I hope you will find interesting and the focus has been especially ported to the inside of the Cathedral.

Please, do check the Sketchfab interactive view to get a sense of the gracious proportions of Eugène's Ideal Cathedral.
Although, I would still advise you to download the map and see it for yourself to appreciate the sheer volume of the build and as it is handcrafted to be fully explorable and way more detailed than this overview.

I would also recommend using the Conquest texture pack even though the map still works quite well with the default textures too.

As it was requested, here is a link to dowload a converted version of the map for Bedrock edition: https://www.mediafire.com/file/epin2hv085havs4/Big_Cathedral_bedrock_edition.zip/file

Enjoy!

I love the cathedral, I toured it a lot and marveled at the paintings of Joan of Arc and the archangel Michael.
I was a little sad when I read its hystory story and saw that it was never built. It would have been a good goal in life to visit that cathedral in person. I'll have to settle for the Sainte-Chapelle.

I have a question...how did you convert the build into a 3D model? Do you use structure-block or Blender's MCprep?

Hi, thank you for you feedback, it's much appreciated!

Yeah, it's a shame that it was not built but from my understanding the sketch was more some kind of aesthetic/thought experiment by Eugene that was suposed to embody the best aspects of late medieval gothic architecture.
Although, you might be surpised to learn that there was in fact a tentative to build a church inspired by this "ideal cathedral": It was the initial plan for the Koekelberg Basilica, but due to a lack of fund (and WWI...) it ended up in a more Art-Déco style.

The Sainte-Chapelle is a true marvel of rayonnant gothic architecture; The play of light through the stained windows is a sight that you certainly will never forget!

Concerning the 3D model, I used Mineways, once you have your schematics saved with WorldEdit you cas use it to save it in most 3D format :)

Could you maybe convert the map into a Bedrock map too. But only if it doesn’t take too much time. But I would really appreciate that and it would help me a lot. Thank you

Hi, I tried to convert the map to the latest version of Bedrock Edition, here is the download link: https://www.mediafire.com/file/epin2hv085havs4/Big_Cathedral_bedrock_edition.zip/file

Would you mind trying it and telling me if the conversion worked ?
