It's been a while, guys. How is everyone?
I've been on and off this project for a while so I'm excited to finally share it. I decided to continue Calvin Hastara's story, which you can find [here], as well as begin another story on the map. The new story involves a man named Vladimir Estragos, whose story I will share later in this post. I'm hoping to continue more stories on this island and develop a real sense of what the island is all about.
What I did in the project itself was imagine Calvin's farmstead 20 years after his death. All of the buildings on the farmstead have been slowly falling apart since. What I'm going to do is separate the rest of this project into categories so it's easier to understand.
Estragos: Ever think we'll get off this island?
Vladimir: Hm?
Estragos: The island.
Vladimir: Oh yes. The island. How long has it been?
Estragos: I asked you a question.
Vladimir: What was the question?
Estragos: The island.
Vladimir: The island. Oh yes. Yes, someone should find us soon.
Estragos: How long has it been?
Vladimir: Not sure.
Estragos: Days? Weeks? Ah, certainly not months. There's still food left. And water.
Vladimir: Yes. Still food and water.
Estragos: People will see the ship and come to investigate.
Vladimir: Yes. Certainly investigate. And then they will find us.
Estragos: The Golden Isle is full of fishermen. We are bound to be saved.
Vladimir: Saved from what?
Estragos: Hm?
Vladimir: Saved. Saved from what?
Estragos: Oh, I don't know. Ourselves.
Vladimir: *Laughter* Ah yes, we are our own worst enemy.
Estragos: Ain't that the truth. *Looks towards tree*
Vladimir: I know what you're thinking.
Estragos: I know that you thought of it before I did.
Vladimir: How much rope is left?
Estragos: Enough for the purpose of what you're intending.
Vladimir: They are coming to save us.
Estragos: That they are, my friend. Saving us from the rope.
Vladimir: This night will never pass.
Estragos: So it seems for the both of us, yet time continues its path towards the sunrise.
Vladimir: Ah yes. The sun. I miss it. Its radiant warmth on the face as the crisp breeze of the sea rushes past the sails. And the gulls joyfully crying above her, all the while the men gaze towards the rising sun with shimmering optimism, bravely facing the new world. I was alive then... *Pause* Oh, how I miss the sun, but the moon is the only one that shines for me now.
*Long Silence*
Vladimir: I can't sleep, Estragos.
Estragos: Nor can I.
Vladimir: I have night terrors, Estragos.
Estragos: So do I.
Vladimir: I want to go home, Estragos.
*Pause*
Estragos: So do I.
Vladimir: But we need to be saved.
Estragos: Saved from ourselves. *They both look towards the tree*
Vladimir: And the rope.
*Long Pause*
Estragos: I can't sleep, Estragos.
Vladimir: Nor can I.
Estragos: What are your dreams?
Vladimir: I kill somebody.
Estragos: Why?
Vladimir: I don't know. Someone makes me do it.
Estragos: Who?
Vladimir: Hm?
Estragos: Who makes you do it?
Vladimir: I do it.
Estragos: No, who makes you do it?
Vladimir: Someone. Something. I don't know.
Estragos: And who is this person you are killing?
Vladimir: I don't see their face. I don't see blood. I just see them. Standing there. And I know. I know they're dead.
Estragos: I'm scared, Vladimir.
Vladimir: Why?
Estragos: I have the same dream, Vladimir.
Vladimir: Of killing someone?
Estragos: No, of killing someone.
Vladimir: Why have you never told me?
Estragos: Why have you never told me?
Vladimir: I'm scared, Estragos.
Estragos: Why?
Vladimir: The tree is watching me.
Estragos: The tree watches both of us. It knows why we are here.
Vladimir: To be saved.
Estragos: Yes. To be saved from the rope.
Vladimir: To be saved from ourselves.
Estragos: It wants us dead, Vladimir.
Vladimir: I know. *Pause* I know.
*Long pause as they both stare at the fire.*
Vladimir: I'm lonely, Estragos.
Estragos: I can be here for you.
Vladimir: No, I don't want you here.
Estragos: What?
Vladimir: No, I don't want you here.
Estragos: What?
Vladimir: You can't help me. You can't be here for me. Only I can be here for me. Only I can save myself from the rope. Only me.
Estragos: But Vladimir --
Vladimir: No! I want you gone. Leave me! I want to be alone!
He's not leaving you, Vladimir. He will stay.
Vladimir: Estragos?
Estragos: What.
Vladimir: Don't leave me, Estragos.
Estragos: I'm not leaving you. I never will.
*Long pause*
Vladimir: The tree wants us to die.
Estragos: It is inevitable.
Vladimir: It is inevitable.
Kill him.
Estragos: The rope is calling.
Vladimir: There's only enough rope for one person.
Estragos: That is enough.
Vladimir: It is inevitable.
Estragos: Find the thickest branch.
Vladimir: Even the thickest of branches can be hollow.
Estragos: But how can one be sure?
Vladimir: What if we are too heavy?
The branch will hold.
Estragos: I think this branch will hold. Where is the rope?
Vladimir: I have it. Where is the rope?
Estragos: I have it.
Vladimir: How do you tie a noose?
I know how.
Estragos: I think that's how you do it.
Vladimir: I was never a good climber.
Estragos: A shame, really.
Vladimir: I know, I should be better at climbing.
Estragos: No, not that.
Vladimir: What?
You couldn't save yourself from the rope.

Calvin Hastara Farmstead
After the majority of settlers on the Golden Isle learned of Calvin's fate, the entire island was condemned. People were scared to even step foot on the island in fear that the creature that killed Calvin would kill them as well. 20 years would pass until an unfortunate soul would be claimed by the beast. During those 20 years the farmstead was untouched, and the forces of nature soon took advantage of the interior and exterior of the building.
About Vladimir Estragos
Vladimir Estragos is a lone fisherman who was caught in a violent storm. His ship veered too close to Calvin's island and crashed on the shore. He was forced to camp next to a white tree. The beast was aware of Vladimir's presence on the island and began the hunt. Although he did not keep a diary, Vladimir recorded what happened to him in a strange way.

The Story of Vladimir: Explained
Vladimir and Estragos are the same person. The story above is a dialogue to himself, as a result of the beast slowly making him insane. The beast is Estragos, and is talking to Vladimir, trying to convince him to kill himself. The story was found when a search party found Vladimir's camp and diary.
The story and name was inspired from the play "Waiting for Godot", where the two main characters are named Vladimir and Estragon. The road and tree both existed in the play and had heavy symbolic significance in the original play.
