This kind of clothes would have been worn by Estonian peasants in the Vaivara region during the 19th century when going to church, to festivals and other important events. Nowadays these clothes are worn by Estonians during traditional events or the Estonian Song and Dance Festival but there is a growing trend of wearing our national costume during more "mundane" celebrations as well.

The clothes above would have only been worn by unmarried and young women. Married women and mothers would have worn a different head covering (called tanu) and an apron.
