A 17th century Barbary Pirate from North Africa. After the Ottoman empire lost control of the sea, European powers declared open season on all Muslim sailors. So many captured Muslim sailors were made into galley slaves that it caused an employment crisis in Europe. Having slipped out of the Ottoman Empire's safety, North Africa's Muslims banded together and declared their own war on Europe, this one characterized by piracy rather than full scale battles. These Barbary pirates sailed the seas for centuries, challenging major powers and taking captives as far north as Ireland and as far west as South Carolina. They worked out of pirate havens and kingdoms in north African, and directly or indirectly for the Ottoman empire, "doing their part" in resisting European control of the seas. Their glory days ended when the United States invaded and marched across North Africa, dismantling their pirate havens.
