I have been obsessed for the past couple weeks with the Netflix mini-series The Queen's Gambit (2020), and decided to try my hand at re-creating the main character.
The Queen's Gambit is based on a 1981 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, and follows Elizabeth "Beth" Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), a young orphan who becomes a prodigy in the traditionally male-dominated world of chess during the cold war. The character and story are fictional, but they draw heavily from a number of real historical figures. Bobby Fischer is perhaps the biggest inspiration - his prodigiousness, his struggles with addiction and his showdown with the Soviets are all paralleled in Beth's story.
This particular rendition of Beth is kind of a composite of two different parts of the series. The outfit is based on the one she wears during her interview with Life magazine in episode 3...
...however, her hair and face are based on the version of Beth in the later episodes, when she adopts more of an Audrey Hepburn type look
this combo felt like the best way of capturing what felt, to me, like the essence of the character.
